10The Sandai Kitetsu
Zoro Challenges A Terrifying Curse
Early on in the season,the Straw Hats will arrive in Loguetown, where Zoro will make a major addition to his arsenal.One item that he will acquire is the Sandai Kitetsu, a cursed katana that is rumored to bring only pain to whoever dares to wield it. Zoro, however, is unfazed, willing to test his luck against the curse.
While it is an earlier moment of the series, it is still an excellent showcase of Zoro’s character. Despite the superstition surrounding the blade,Zoro recklessly presses ahead with his gambit, showing both his bravery and his disregard for the risks.
9Buggy’s Return
The Clown-Themed Pirate Became A Fan Favorite
Alongside Zoro’s gambit,Loguetown also brings the Straw Hat Pirates into contact with two older adversaries.Not only is Luffy a wanted man, but season 1 saw him wrongveteran pirates Buggy (Jeff Ward)and Alvida (Ilia Isorelys Paulino), and the pair have joined forces to get revenge on the young pirate. The pair cornered him on the execution platform, out for blood.
Buggy emerged as one of the most beloved characters ofOne Pieceseason 1, so his return is highly anticipated. Even if his appearance in season 2 may be even more brief than his role in the first season, his team-up with Alvida and showdown with Luffy in Loguetown will act as the perfect reintroduction of the series to fans.
8Crocodile’s Debut
Baroque Works Is Set To Be A Terrifying Foe
One Pieceseason 2 will see the debut of Baroque Works, a crime syndicate headed by the powerful Mr. O, also known as theWarlord of the Sea Crocodile. Played by Joe Manganiello, the Warlord has launched a campaign to overthrow the kingdom of Arabasta. While not a direct participant, Crocodile still makes an imposing debut upon its arrival.
No matter how he may debut,Crocodile will be a major presence going forward.As such, even though he may not directly be playing a key part in the events of season 2, the series will have to set him up as an imposing villain who should be feared. This will make his eventual face-off with Luffy all the more powerful in season 3.
7Smoker VS. Luffy
The Marines Aren’t Done With The Straw Hat Pirates
Inthe final moments ofOne Pieceseason 1, audiences got a glimpse at a white haired Marine observing Luffy’s wanted poster. This is the Marine Captain Smoker, who is stationed in Loguetown and portrayed by Callum Kerr. Smoker sets his sights on bringing Luffy to justice, making him the antagonist of the first arc of the season.
Furthermore,Smoker and Luffy’s showdown in Loguetown is also the introduction of Dragon, with Rigo Sanchez set to take on the role. Season 2 will likely keep the character wrapped in mystery, which will leave viewers not familiar with the anime speculating until more reveals later on in the series.
6Laboon
The Straw Hats Make A Larger-Than-Life Ally
Upon entering the Grand Line, the Straw Hat crew encounters a creature unlike anything they had encountered in their adventures so far. The largest whale species in theOne Pieceworld, Island Whales are highly intelligent, highly communicative, and incredibly resilient against most physical damage. This is Laboon, a whale with his own desires to fulfill.
Season 1 managed to capture the bombastic and over-the-top nature of the manga within its visuals,but Laboon’s debut will mark a major escalation in the scope of the world. Laboon’s appearance is the first glimpse at what creatures the Straw Hats will face in the Grand Line. Further, Laboon is a recurring character who will return.
5Ace’s Introduction
A Face From Luffy’s Past Arrives
In the final moments of the Drum Island arc, a new pirate made their debut. This is Portgas D. Ace, the child of Pirate King Gol D. Roger himself and sworn brother to Luffy, who too set out to make his name as a pirate. As Luffy gains notoriety in his adventures,Ace sets out to reunite with his brother, following his travels.
Regardless of how he debuts, Ace’s first appearance will be a major moment. Currently,Ace’s live-action performer has not been confirmed. Netflix may be holding the casting close to its chest until season 2 finally releases.
4Nico Robin’s Arrival
A Future Friend Began As A Foe
As Baroque Works continues to tangle with the Straw Hat Pirates, more and more members of the syndicate rise to the occasion to challenge Luffy and his crew. One such operative is Miss All Sunday, otherwise known as Nico Robin. Played by Lera Abova, Miss All Sunday is one of the later Baroque Works members to face the crew after a new pirate joins.
While she may only have a brief appearance in the Whisky Peak arc,Nico Robin is a beloved character who will stick around.As such, even if she may only play a small part in the upcoming season, her debut is highly anticipated among fans.
3Dr. Hiriluk’s Farewell
Chopper’s Father’s Death Sets Him Down His Path
One Pieceseason 2 will markthe long-awaited debut of Tony Tony Chopper, the anthropomorphized young reindeer voiced by Milaela Hoover. After eating the Hito Hito no Mi Devil Fruit, Chopper was transformed into a human hybrid and rendered an outcast to both animals and humans. However, Chopper is taken in by Dr. Hiriluk (Mark Harelik).
While Hiriluk becomes Chopper’s adoptive father and mentor, the doctor falls ill, leading to Chopper attempting to save him. However, Chopper accidentally poisons Hiriluk, though the doctor knowingly took his adoptive son’s medicine. Upon his passing, Chopper vows to be a great Doctor, making his father figure proud.
2Vivi’s True Identity Reveal
A New Ally Switches Side
Another member of Baroque Works that the Straw Hat Pirates encounter is Miss Wednesday, played by Charithra Chandran. However, whileshe acts as a foil to the crew,it is eventually revealed that the operative is, in fact, Nefertari Vivi, princess of Arabasta, and acting as a double agent. Her true identity comes to light towards the end of the Whisky Peak arc.
Vivi’s identity reveal during the Whisky Peak arc represents a major turning point for the character. Up until that point, Vivi had been framed as an antagonist to the Straw Hat Pirates despite having her ulterior motives. As such, the reveal about her true nature is a moment that has major ramifications for her character and future seasons.
1Chopper Leaves With The Straw Hats
Chopper Is Given A Grand Farewell
At the end of the Arabasta arc,Chopper chooses to join the Straw Hat Pirates, becoming the Going Merry’s doctor,much to mother-figure Kureha’s (Katey Sagal) distress. Despite their initial conflict, Kureha sets out to give Chopper a memorable send-off. The moment is an emotional gesture that ties back to Hiriluk, bringing his unfulfilled dream to a close.
One Pieceseason 2 will stop at Drum Island.
As the conclusion of the Drum Island Arc and season 2 overall, Chopper joining the crew will be the emotional climax to the next batch of episodes. As such, it has the responsibility of making Chopper’s decision impactful while leaving the next chapter of Luffy’s journey on a high note in a way that will bring viewers back forOne Pieceseason 3.
