Crunchyrollhas made a name for itself as one of the best streaming services around, andthat might be why a few series got more love than they deserved. Some of the best anime series of all time are on Crunchyroll, and that attracts a ton of viewers who want to check out what else the platform has to offer.

Some of the most overrated Crunchyroll series have garnered a lot of attention for the wrong reasons. Some series were initially excellent before falling off, showing that they weren’t able to deliver on the quality that they once put forward.

Mashle Episode 19 Mash making a determined face.

Other series gained a lot of attention because of how ridiculous their premises were. Either way, there are way too many great series on Crunchyroll to give the most overrated in the art form attention.

10Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Animated By A-1 Pictures, Based on the Manga by Hajime Komoto

Mashle: Magic and Musclesalmost seemed interesting. It’s a decent series that feels like a combination ofBlack Clover, Harry Potter,andOne-Punch Man,but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It’s a relatively boring series that copies a lot of the most popular elements the aforementioned series put forward.

There are some good moments inMashle, but not enough to warrant how much attention it got. A-1 Pictures is one of the best studios in anime, and that could be another reason why this average series got so much love on Crunchyroll. Fans ofMashleshould check out bothBlack CloverandOne-Punch Man,as their two series that have the same elements on a better scale.

Domestic Girlfriend key anime visual depicting the main protagonist having his face and mouth covered by two girls.

9Domestic Girlfriend

Animated by Diomedéa, Based on the Manga By Kei Sasuga

Domestic Girlfriendis one of the most uncomfortable viewing experiences around. It’s a series that takes itself way too seriously from start to finish, and it never gets better. IfDomestic Girlfriendwas a comedy series, it would have been watchable. The series tries to play itself asa realistic romance animeand fails in every way.

Domestic Girlfriendstars Natsuo Fuji as a 17-year-old high school student who falls in love with his English teacher, Hina Tachibana. At a mixer, he meets Rui Tachibana, and the two sneak off and have sex. His father reveals that he’s getting married soon and is moving in his new wife and her two daughters, later revealed to be none other than Hina and Rui.

The Rentaro Family embrace Rentaro as everyone smiles and cheers.

8The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You

Animated By Bibury Animation Studios, Based On The Manga Written By Rikito Nakamura And Illustrated By Yukiko Nozawa

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love Youhad a strong first season thanks to its ridiculous premise. The series is set around Rentaro Aijo as a hapless young man who just wants a girlfriend. After a prayer goes a little too well, Rentaro is gifted 100 soulmates who will all die if he doesn’t date them.

The first season is strong because the premise is fresh and funny, but by the second season, it’s a little played out. The series runs out of steam as it repeats the same gag over and over. After the first 10 girlfriends, the series begins to get in its own way as it’s forced to repeat the same jokes.

Rachel Gardner and Zack from Angels Of Death standing side by side in front of the rest of the cast.

Animated by J.C. Staff, Based on the Video Game By Hoshikuzu KRNKRN

Angels of Deathdoesn’t deserve half of the love that it gets on Crunchyroll. It’s one of the worst edgy anime series around. The series features Rachel “Ray” Gardner as an amnesiac who finds herself in the middle of a death game. Ascending the floors of the building she’s trapped in, she meets Isaac “Zack” Foster, a serial killer who quickly loses interest in killing Ray.

Angels of Deathisn’t one of thebest dark anime series of all time, and it’s not even a good one. It tries too hard at creating a brooding atmosphere when the franchise would have been better if it didn’t. There are a couple of decent elements to the story, but not enough to redeem its overall lackluster quality.

Natsuko in the real world with her hoodie up, wearing headphones, and her long black hair obscuring her face

6Zenshu

An Original Anime Series By MAPPA, Directed By Mitsue Yamazaki and Written By Kimiko Ueno

Zenshuis a very dark anime series in reality. It’s a series starring an overworked anime creator who seemingly dies due to a mixture of exhaustion and poisoning. While that isn’t one of the darkest premises around, the bleakness comes from the fact that the series was created by MAPPA, a production companyknown for their terrible working conditions.

Zenshuis terrible both on- and off-screen. The series follows the adventures of one of the least likable characters in anime. Natsuko Hirose is a cold, rude, small-minded character who is hard to enjoy in the slightest. She’s not alone, as the side characters inZenshuuare equally unlikable, creating one of the worst isekai series in recent memory.

A still from the anime series Rent A Girlfriend with two characters holding hands

5Rent-a-Girlfriend

Animated By TMS Entertainment, Based on the Manga By Reiji Miyajima

Rent-a-Girlfriend,likeThe 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You,gets in its own way. The series revolves around another one of the least likable protagonists in anime as he looks to use a girlfriend rental service to get over feeling lonely. While the premiseis interesting enough, the series runs it into the ground.

Kazuya Kinoshita exhausts the rental girlfriend premise because he never develops as a character. He eventually develops feelings for his rental girlfriend but doesn’t do anything besides getting in his own way. He stops himself, and the series, from making any real progress, and it’s incredibly frustrating to see.

86-Eighty-Six-Anime-Key-Visual

486 Eighty Six

Animated A-1 Pictures, Based On The Light Novel Series By Asato Asato

86 Eight-Sixhad a strong first season/cour, but the second let the season down.86had a decent amount of potential and might have had what it takes to be one of thebest shōnen anime of the new generation, but it couldn’t capitalize on the momentum it created.

86tries to be a dark, edgy anime, and for the most part, it doesn’t do that badly. Still, the series amassed a huge following it didn’t really deserve. It’s not a bad season by any means, but compared to other modern-day shōnen giants likeChainsaw Man,Demon Slayer, andJujutsu Kaisen, this series got way too much attention.

Fire Force Season 3 Anime Promotional Poster

3Fire Force

Animated By David Production, Based on the Manga By Atsushi Ohkubo

Fire Force’sthird season is one ofthe biggest disappointments in anime. The first two seasons were amazing, featuring some of the best sound design in the art form.Fire Forceis a rare anime series that feels like it should be watched in a movie theater. The battles are magnificent, the characters are entertaining, and the story felt fresh and a unique addition to shōnen.

For whatever reason, there was a five-year period between the second and third seasons, killing all the momentum that the series created. The third season ofFire Forcehas terrible pacing, feels incredibly convoluted, and features too many skippable moments that bring the overall quality of the series crashing down.

Main visual for Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

2Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

Animated By A-1 Pictures, Based on the Light Novel By Isuna Hasekura and Jū Ayakura

The originalSpice and Wolfanime series is a beloved cult classic, and fans were more than excited to see a reboot of the popular series. Unfortunately, the remake of the popular series featured too many flaws to be considered great. At its core, there’s a good story to be told, but the series includes so many frustrating moments that it’s nothing less than overrated.

Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets Wise Wolffeatures one of the most frustrating characters in anime. Kraft Lawrence, the male protagonist of the series, has seemingly made it his mission to get in his own way as much as possible. He’s constantly gambling with either his life or Holo’s to create an annoying, repeating series of events that he could’ve prevented from happening.

Rimuru smiles as Ramiris celebrates.

1That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Animated By Eight Bit, Based on the Light Novel By Fuse and Mitz Vah

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slimeshould be up there withthe best isekai series of all time. The first two seasons were amazing, showcasing a powerful main character as he builds a country fit for monsters and humans alike. The third season nearly tanked the entire franchise, destroying every ounce of joy the first two put forward.

The third season ofThat Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slimeis referred to as “That Time I Got Stuck in a Meeting” because almost all the season takes place within a series of meetings. It’s boring to say the least. The third season of the series doesn’t feature any of the aspects that made the isekai interesting in the first place, and the franchise would be better if it was excluded entirely.
