The Nintendo Switch is making quite the home for indie titles, with games likeStardew Valleyeyeing physical releaseson the console. The latest to receive a physical release on the Switch is the Action RPGCrossCode.
CrossCodetakes its inspiration from RPGs from the SNES era, emulatingclassics likeSecret of Manawith its action-oriented approach to battle, but modernizing them for current sensibilities. The story follows Lea, a girl who has lost her memories, and in order to retrieve those memories must play an MMORPG called “CrossWorlds.” The game within a game construct is a fairly popular anime trope, but is a bit more rare in video games.

CrossCodereceived praisewhen it first released to Steam in 2018, and is receiving a second wave of accolades for its console release this month. On top of that, the game is being given a physical release on Switch, PC, and PS4. The SteelBook Edition features an instruction card, manual, reversible cover, and obviously a steelbook to house it. The Collector’s Edition includes these items plus a hardcover box, 2-disc soundtrack, the “CrossCodeCompendium” book, stickers, poster, and a keychain.
The physical release, provided by Strictly Limited Games, is a nice way to celebrate and build excitement for an indie game that otherwise might struggle to find the spotlight.
