Following the official announcement ofBorderlands 3,a minor controversy developed over returning character, Rhys. He first appeared in Telltale’sTales from the Borderlandsand was voiced by Troy Baker, but Baker was reportedly not asked back, although Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford refutes Baker’s claim. Regardless of theTroy BakerBorderlands 3controversy, the fact remains that someone else is voicing the character of Rhys this time around.
Today, voice actor Ray Chase revealed that he will be playing Rhys inBorderlands 3. Some may know Chase as the voice of Noctis Lucis Caelum fromFinal Fantasy XV, but he has a variety of roles under his belt including Marlon inThe Walking Dead: Final Season, the male Freelancer inAnthem, and Genichiro Ashina inSekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
The voice actor took to his personal Twitter to show his respect for Troy Baker’s take on the character. He also states that he is not a perfect voice match but a new interpretation of the character, which may or may not mitigate some of the confusion over the issue. One thing that drew the attention of Chase’s fans was his reference to the character as Mustache Rhys, potentially hinting at some changes that make the voice difference effectively obsolete (which has been echoed by Pitchford as well).
Notably, Rhys isn’t the only character with a different voice actor, as David Eddings who voiced Claptrap in the originalBorderlandsandBorderlands 2is not returning forBorderlands 3. One silver lining that fans may accept is thatAshly Burch, who voiced Tiny Tina, has been confirmed to reprise the role of the fan-favorite character.
It remains to be seen what other changes are in the game, but the recent gameplay event did give a quick glimpse at Lilith who sounds very much like her old self. And the few changes to the gameplay itself helpBorderlands3 focus on giving players what they want, so players can expect a few varied quality of life changes as far as gameplay goes over past entries.
