Jurassic World Rebirthhas stomped past its original projections during its opening weekend. The new movie, which is the seventh installment in theJurassicfranchise, was directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey.

TheJurassic World Rebirthreleasekicked off on Wednesday ahead of the Fourth of July holiday in the United States, cominghot on the heels of the Brad Pitt racing filmF1 The Movie, which opened on June 27 with the highest-grossing debut ever for Apple Studios.

PerDeadline, as of Sunday morning,Jurassic World Rebirthis expected to close out its debut weekend with a 3-day domestic gross of$91.5 millionand a 5-day domestic gross of$147.3 million, exceeding its original projections of $81.7 million and $137.5 million respectively. This ismore than enough for it to toppleF1 The Movieand take No. 1.

Additionally, it has smashed a box office record by earningthe best single-day Fourth of July domestic gross of the 2020s, beating out the previous No. 1 titles, which were 2020’sRelic($48,259), 2021’sF9($5.2 million), 2022’sMinions: The Rise of Gru($16 million), 2023’sSound of Freedom($14.2 million), and 2024’sDespicable Me 4($20.3 million).

5

$60.2 million (weekend 3)

For the most part,Jurassic World Rebirthtopping the chart has resulted in the previous weekend’s Top 5 moving down one slot apiece. For instance,F1 The Moviehas been bumped down to No. 2 with a projected 54% drop in its sophomore weekend andHow to Train Your Dragonis gliding to No. 3with a more comfortable 44% drop.

Additionally,Pixar’sEliois also holding strong with a 45% drop in its third weekend, though it still doesn’t show signs of being able to make up for its reported $150 million budget. The only aberration is the horror sequel28 Years Later, whichmaintained its place at No. 5 with a 53% drop.

The way that28 Years Laterwas able to do this was the fact that, even in its third weekend,it had much more audience retention than fellow genre sequelM3GAN 2.0, which had debuted the previous weekend with a disappointing $10.2 million, compared to the original viral hit’s $30.4 million debut in 2023.

M3GAN 2.0has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 57%, compared to the original’s Certified Fresh 93%.

M3GAN 2.0has sunk to No. 6 with a projected $3.8 million 3-day grossthat sees it dropping 63%. That is not necessarily catastrophic, as the horror genre typically sees sophomore weekend drops between 50 and 65%. In fact,28 Years Later’s own sophomore drop was 67.5%.

What This Means For Jurassic World Rebirth

It Is On Track To Become A Success

This domestic debut is a solid start for the dinosaur movie in a number of ways. For one thing, the reportedbudget ofJurassic World Rebirthis just $180 million, which isa total that it should have no trouble passing at the domestic box office alone.

Its projected global debut total of$318 millionis already set to obliterate that milestone by the end of Sunday, also making it the ninth highest-grossing movie of the year so far, worldwide. Additionally,Rebirthis set to earna 3-day domestic debut that is higher than any installment in the originalJurassic Parktrilogy.

Below, see a breakdown of the opening weekends and worldwide box office totals of all theJurassic ParkandWorldmovies:

$50.1 million

$91.5 million (projected)

TBD

While the standalone sequel is trailing behind the previous installments in theJurassic Worldsub-franchise, if it maintains its current trajectory compared to those titles,it could end up grossing between $600 million and $770 millionby the end of its theatrical run.

While its exact break-even point is unknown,it is unlikely that it needs to earn much more than $450 millionin order to turn a profit, so this could be good news for the longevity of the franchise and thepotentialJurassic World 5, especially if that movie can be kept on a slightly tighter budget that reduces its financial risk.

Our Take On The Weekend Box Office

The Reign Of PG Movies Is Over

WithJurassic World Rebirthtaking the No. 1 slot fromF1 The Movie,PG-13 movies are beginning to rule the roost this summerafter every weekend from Memorial Day throughF1’s ascent was dominated byLilo & StitchandHow to Train Your Dragon, both of which were rated PG.

Jurassic World Rebirthmay have cemented a trend of PG-13 No. 1 titles that will continue throughout July thanks to theupcomingSuperman, due July 11, andFantastic Four, which debuts on July 25. IfSuperman’s sophomore weekend can take No. 1 over the R-ratedI Know What You Did Last Summerand the PGSmurfs, PG-13 titles seem set to dominate.
