Bradley Cooper admitted that where the upcomingGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3goes with his character, Rocket Raccoon, made him tear up.
Cooper, who has played the traumatized, foul-mouthed, anthropomorphic Raccoon since 2014, detailed how he knew ahead of time what direction the upcoming installment of theGuardians of the Galaxywas going. He also noted how, upon watching how it all played out on the screen, it made him cry knowing the execution.

While talking withEntertainment Tonight, Cooper revealed whatGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3director James Gunntold him about Rocket going into the franchise’s third installment. “He did talk to me about that initially, too, that he had this sort of end game for Rocket and us learning about his origin,” Cooper said. “You never know if that’s actually gonna happen, and then low and behold, we get to this third script, and I read it, and I go, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s exactly what he talked about.'” Cooper then admitted that watching the story unfold made him cry. “It was – emotional’s the right word. I watched a cut of it a while ago, and I cried pretty hard. I mean, it’s pretty hardcore. Little Rocket – he went through a lot, dude. He went through a lot.”
Having an emotional subplot has been right inGuardians of the Galaxy’s corner from the beginning. The first movie had multiple emotional moments, including how Peter Quill coped with his mother’s tragic death and Groot’s sacrifice to keep the Guardians alive during Ronan’s attempts to destroy Xandar. The second installment delved into how Peter realized that, despite having a biological father who was basically a God, Yondu was the one who raised him like a dad. Sadly, Quill realized this truth moments before Yondu’s sacrifice to save his surrogate son.Delving into Rocket Raccoon’s traumatic backstoryisn’t too far off from where the franchise has ventured in the past.
And that won’t be the only emotional subplot going into this movie. Besides all the indications that this will be the conclusion to theGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise, the film may also delve intoStar-Lord trying to rebuild his relationship with Gamora, the woman he loved who he lost thanks to the actions of Thanos during the Infinity Saga. All indications are this will not be the typical Marvel Studios movie that fans have gotten used to over the years. Of course, theGuardians of the Galaxyfranchise has never exactly been one to follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe formula.
Guardians of the Galaxyhas stood out as well as it has because of how different it feels compared to the rest of the MCU. It managed to not only be one of the more successful franchises in the extensive cinematic universe, but it was a miracle knowing how little-known they were before getting its first cinematic installment in 2014. Though some of Marvel Studios’ other recent releases have not earned the box office return they hoped for,Guardians' reputation will likely give them the financial return they want. But with them gone, who knows how Marvel Studios compensates for losing one of their most well-liked franchises?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will be released in theaters on July 17, 2025.
