Call of Dutyfans recently received a bombshell announcement, as Bloomberg has reported that 2023 will be the first year without a premium entry in the series. Now, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has provided more details on whatCall of Dutyfans can expect in this gap year, and those looking forward to this year’s game should be excited.
Thus far, fans have been quick to focus on the rumor that another free-to-play title will be dropping in place of the typical $70 experience. In fact, some believe that it could be the long-rumored and heavily requestedstandalone Zombies game, a project insiders have hinted at for months now. While it remains to be seen if this will amount to anything, Jason Schreier has suggested that 2023 will also be bringing a lot more content to 2022’sCall of Dutyrelease.

Expected to benamedCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, several reports have released that suggest Activision is very confident in Infinity Ward’s latest title. Development was supposedly coming along very smoothly over a year ahead of the game’s release, suggesting that the nextCall of Dutygame should be extremely polished. This is good news, asCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2will apparently be keeping multiplayer fans busy until the next premium game drops in 2024. According to Schreier, this will be done through “ongoing DLC.”
Intriguingly, it is currently unclear whether this DLC will be paid content or free. SinceCall of Duty: Modern Warfare2019, all additional maps have been free of charge, withBattle Passesand cosmetic bundles serving as the franchise’s form of monetization. Paid DLC would see the franchise returning to its old formula, though with so little information available regarding these “nebulous” plans, it is impossible to know what the approach will be toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s rumored 2023 content.
To be fair, it is not unheard of for the newerCall of Dutytitles to get support after their life cycles have come to an end. After all,Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warrecently receiveda new Assault Rifleand a remaster of WMD, whileModern Warfare2019 got some new maps afterBlack Ops Cold Warhad launched. These content drops went unannounced and unpromoted, as doing so would likely have distracted from the active game. WithCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, there would not be a new game to promote, so more map drops, weapon additions, and Seasons could be added and advertised properly.
While all leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, Schreier and Bloomberg have always been reliable, so this information could absolutely be true. If it is, fans ofModern Warfare2019’s multiplayershould be happy to experience aCall of Dutysequel that gets even more post-launch support.
