Call of Duty: Black Ops 6andWarzonehave some of the strangest crossovers in recent memory, and they’re about to get even weirder, starting today and continuing on July 20. Just when the strangeness of the previousBeavis & ButtheadCoDcrossoverwas almost becoming accepted and normal in the game, another odd crossover has officially been announced, and it’s actually fairly similar to theBeavis & Buttheadone.

In a reveal trailer posted on theCall of Dutyofficial YouTube page,Call of Dutyis crossing over withAmerican Dad, and part of the collaboration is available right now. Starting today, Stan Smith fromAmerican Dadis available as an operator skin. Roger will join him on July 20. Stan’s operator pack will be $20, while Roger’s will be $25. Roger’s bundle includes multiple skins for the iconic alien character, while both packs feature operator lines and additional cosmetics.

Weird Crossovers Are Becoming Commonplace

American Dadis arguably one of thebest adult animated shows, and even though the show has passed its peak in popularity, theabsurdity of Stan and Roger being inBlack Ops 6andWarzoneis a fun novelty. WithBlack Ops 6being on Xbox Game Pass, andWarzonebeing free-to-play already, the hefty $25 price tag for each of the bundles isn’t too surprising. The crossover fits well with the rest of the cel-shaded Season 4 Reloaded theme.

Roger is getting more love, receiving three different skins, compared to Stan’s singular option, but that isn’t the part that fans seem to have a problem with. The general reception to this announcement has been predominantly negative, with a lot of comments on the video pointing out thatCoDis more focused on expensive crossovers than refining gameplay, fixing lingering problems, and appealing to hardcore fans. Several comments compare the current state of the game toFortniteorRoblox, arguing that the comparatively more realistic military game isn’t taking itself seriously.

Our Take: The Weird Crossovers Are Fun

But Has CoD Lost Its Way?

While the animated cartoon crossovers are fun, the mostly negative reception to the announcement so far brings up the question ofCoD’s current audience and its lasting appeal.Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfarewas arguably the game that defined multiplayer standards for decades to come. WithBlack Ops 6andWarzoneappearing to be chasing trends set by other popular shooters, it seems long-time fans are feeling like the game they loved is being replaced by gimmicks.

Black Ops 7is on the horizon and launching later this year withat least two new game modes, and it’s also a day-one Game Pass title for the second year in a row, so it’s possible forCall of Dutyto course-correct for its hardcore audience. On the other hand, the crossovers do keep the game interesting and allow players to control some of their favorite characters from other media. WithCall of Duty: Black Ops 6being as big as it is, it’s hard to please everyone.
