It’s no secret thatDestiny 2’sTrials of the Ninemode is struggling. The iteration of the popular Trials of Osiris PvP experience had its fans early on but player numbers suggest that things need to change.
Unfortunately, it turns out that any hope for Trials of the Nine going on hiatus is unrealistic. According to Bungie Community Manager dmg04, Trials must stay active forDestiny 2since it is tied to Trophies/Achievements. For those that might not be familiar, Destiny 2 features a Trophy or Achievement for meeting the Emissary, the Trials of the Nine vendor. An introduction is not too hard to achieve, though, only requiring one win.
Destinycontent creator Typhoon Trav made the suggestion on Twitter, saying that Trials of the Nine should be put on hold for a season so that Bungie can make some improvements to the mode. It’s not a bad suggestion given that theplayer count for Trials is dwindling, especially on PC.
OtherDestinycreators suggested specific ways to improve Trials, with shorter intros and lower player counts ranking among the most popular. Essentially, players want to see Trials of the Nine more closely resemble Trials of Osiris. Reverting back toDestiny 1’s approach is a common theme lately, and it seems Bungie is making changes to get the sequel there with its September expansion.
The concept of putting Trials of the Nine on hiatus isn’t anything new, but this is the first time that Bungie has addressed the possibility. Their reasoning for not taking the mode off the schedule makes sense, though, since the last timeplayers lost access to Trophiesthere was a strong uproar.
At the same time, that doesn’t mean Trials of the Nine can’t change over time. Bungie can keep the current version, which rotates maps and modes like Survival and Countdown every Friday, active and eventually swap it out with an improved version. Perhaps the devs might even take some of the suggestions made into account.
