Earlier this week, Bungie released update 2.0 forDestiny 2, which is meant to pave the way for Forsaken, the game’s Year 2 expansion. There were a ton of changes included with the update, including arebalancing of weapon damageand a new rewards system built around challenges instead of milestones, however not everything changed in the game was outlined by Bungie.
Apparently, with the release of update 2.0,Destiny 2players have noticed that Skill-Based Matchmaking has returned. Many will remember that thefeature was accidentally turned offby a bug and since then Bungie has yet to say whether they planned to turn it back on.
Given that,Destiny 2players were concerned when they noticed that matchmaking was slower than normal and many of the matches were more competitive (or “sweaty”) than they had been in the past. Needless to say, some players were frustrated but Bungie might not be to blame.
After hearing plenty of complaints online, Bungie Community Manager dmg04 said that he would forward the concern to the appropriate team and investigate if a change was made. He also stressed that when changes are made to matchmaking they will be clearly outlined in patch notes, but this week’s update featured no mention of matchmaking changes.
The more likely case is that matchmaking is not working properly following the launch ofupdate 2.0. To support that, many players are also noticing that strike matchmaking – which is PvE and should not take skill into account – is not working correctly either. In some cases, players would spawn into a strike by themselves, which is hardly ideal.
The good news is that Bungie is investigating the issue and a change was not made on purpose. That being said, it is entirely possible that skill-based matchmaking was always meant to come back and this is a return. If nothing else, Bungie should address what is going on and likely implement some form of fix – at least for strike matchmaking before thelaunch of Forsaken next week.
