Dune 3 Won’t Be Filmed Entirely In IMAX After All
According to a report fromVariety, IMAX’s CEO misspoke when talking about how much ofDune 3Denis Villeneuve is filming in IMAX. The outlet notes that the movie"will not be entirely shot with Imax cameras.“The original report continues as follows.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond has revealed an exciting new detail aboutDune 3. Denis Villeneuve’sDune: Part Twowas one of the most critically and commercially successful movies of 2024, and thankfully the acclaimed filmmaker will return to direct the third movie. TheupcomingDune: Part Threewill be Villeneuve’s last film in the sci-fi franchise, but it seems like it will be the biggest entry yet.

Timothée Chalamet will reprise his role as Paul Atreides in the third movie. His character will serve as the Emperor in the next entry, but based on the ending ofDune: Part Two, the Bene Gesserit and even Zendaya’s Chani will likely conspire to dethrone him. This will make for an epic conclusion to the trilogy, which Villeneuve will shoot entirely with IMAX cameras.
In an interview withCNBC, Gelfond revealed thatthe entirety ofDune 3will be shot with IMAX cameras, which is a feat that has only been achieved by Christopher Nolan’s next movie. In the interview, Gelfond expressed how excited he is forDune 3, as well asBond 26, which Villeneuve is also directing. Read his full comments and watch the interview below:

He’s so creative, he’s making the nextDunewith IMAX cameras, he’s filming the whole thing. So we haven’t started talking yet, but I’m praying that that’s the case withBond.
What Being Shot Entirely With IMAX Cameras Means For Dune 3
Dune 3 Will Be Even Bigger Than The Previous Two Movies
This year,Nolan’sThe Odyssey, which is set for a June 05, 2025 release, became the first movie ever to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. SinceNolan has been a longtime IMAX advocate and is often regarded as one of the most visionary filmmakers of our time, it’s fitting that he is the first director to film an entire movie with IMAX cameras.
While Greig Fraser shot the previous two films in the sci-fi franchise,Linus Sandgren will be the cinematographer forDune 3.
Based on thetrailer forThe Odysseythat is playing before showings of the recently releasedJurassic World Rebirth, it looks like Nolan’s next movie will be visually breathtaking. However, just like Nolan, Villeneuve is also often recognized as one of the most visionary filmmakers currently working. Therefore, it’s amazing that he will be the second director to accomplish this IMAX feat.
Interestingly,Dune 3may have a slightly different look than the first two movies. While Greig Fraser shot the previous two films in the sci-fi franchise,Linus Sandgren will be the cinematographer forDune 3. There’s no need to worry, though, since Sandgren is also an amazing cinematographer who has shot movies likeNo Time to Die,First Man, andLa La Land.
Our Take On Dune 3 Being Shot Entirely With IMAX Cameras
Dune 3 Will Be An Amazing Theatrical Experience
Even though there have been some changes to the creative team forDune 3, the fact that Villeneuve is still spearheading the project makes me confident that it will be just as good as the second film. Practically every movie Villeneuve has directed has been incredible, soI can’t wait to see the thirdDunefilm, which is currently set for a June 12, 2025 release date.
Dune: Part Twowas arguably the most amazing theatrical experience of last year, and the fact that the next movie will be shot entirely with IMAX cameras suggests that it could be even better. WithThe OdysseyandDune 3, cinephiles are in for several treats in 2026. Therefore, after hearing this news, I’m now even more excited aboutDune: Part Three.
