Summary
MSI has shared the first benchmarks for the controversial Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, and it performed worse than the 8GB variant in most of the games it tested. The latest offering from Nvidia wassilently launched on July 18with the company’s own slew of benchmarks, which showed barely any performance improvements over the 8GB variant, except for more memory-heavy games likeA Plague Tale: Requiem.
Nvidia’s 16GB variant of the RTX 4060 Ti broke cover yesterday and to no one’s surprise, there wereno day 1 benchmarksor performance comparisons. The semiconductor maker took a back seat with the launch of the 16GB variant and kept even its board partners wondering about the availability of the GPU. Furthermore, it did not provide any review samples and released the GeForce Game Ready drivers for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB on the day of launch, meaning no one could publish benchmarks on day 1.

The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Ti GAMING OC 16G is the latest offering by Gigabyte in the RTX 4060 series. It is the 16GB VRAM version of the 4060 Ti that was launched back in May. With double the VRAM, it can outperform the 8GB variant in memory-intensive games and productivity applications.

MSI was one of the board partners that was kept in the dark about the launch. Now, however, it has released the first benchmarks for the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB GAMING X SLIM, and it performed worse thanthe 8GB RTX 4060 Ti, though not by a lot. During the MSI Insider weekly podcast, it showed FPS numbers forCyberpunk 2077at Ultra settings with ray tracing (RT) on and found that the 8GB variant saw an average of 91.4 FPS while the 16GB variant saw an average of 90.56 FPS.
A similar story inF1 2023at Ultra settings with RT on, the 8GB variant managed 103 FPS while the 16GB variant pushed 101 FPS.Rainbow 6: Siegeat Ultra settings saw an average difference of 4 FPS between the 8GB and 16GB models, with the former outperforming the latter.Fortnite(Epic settings with RT on) andHogwarts Legacy(Ultra settings, DLSS, Frame Gen) had almost identical performance with the 8GB variant, just barely inching ahead inFortnite.
CS:GOwas the only game that performed better on the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti and with a decent margin. At ‘Auto’ settings, the 8GB pushed 419 FPS while the 16GB managed 445 FPS. As for how this difference translates to real-world gaming performance, it would be insignificant. The performance numbers were expected to be similar to the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB given that they have identical specifications. Notably, the 16GB variant has a slightly higher TDP of 165W compared to the 8GB variant’s 160W.
With that said, we should wait for more reviews and benchmarks of the 16GB variant before jumping to any conclusions. MSI unveiled the ‘SLIM’ lineup of GPUs at Computex this year, which includes all Nvidia RTX 40-series GPUs. What’s different about this lineup is that the cards are somewhat slimmer than other board partner cards, even though they still seem like 2+ slot cards. Whether this slim design of the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti graphics card has something to do with its lackluster performance, remains to be seen.
