Arrowverse star Melissa Benoist, who starred as Supergirl on The CW, opens up about the newSupermanandSupergirlmovies in James Gunn’sDC Universe. With both the DCEU and Arrowverse franchises now over, DC Studios is set to explore a new continuity on the big and small screens through live-action and animation. ThoughGunn’sSupermanmovie for the DCUwill help expand the franchise when it releases in less than a month, Kara Zor-El is also eying her return to the world of cinema in the upcomingSupergirlfilm in 2026.
While David Corenswet and Milly Alcock are set as the DCU’s Superman and Supergirl respectively, a former Girl of Steel is also joining in on the excitement for the Kryptonian cousins' cinematic future. In a new interview withWatchMojo, Benoist, who portrayed Supergirl for more than half a decade in the Arrowverse, was asked if the newSupermanmovie has been on her radar, which led to the DC TV star to share the following.

Yeah, of course I’ll support! Once you’ve donned the glyph, you’re part of a very small club of people that has worn capes. So it always feels special when any iteration of the story and the canon comes to life, so I will be there to support. Is Milly Alcock supposed to be in this James Gunn [movie]? I don’t know… I’m more excited for her telling of Supergirl, but I’m biased! [laughs]
Benoist headlined theSupergirlTV show for six seasons, with season 1 having aired initially on CBS before the show moved to The CW for season 2 and forward. Throughout her time in the franchise, Benoist’s Supergirl took part in several Arrowverse crossovers over the years before her DC TV show came to an end in November 2021.

What Melissa Benoist’s Comments Mean For The DCU Movies
One of the greatest aspects of DC’s extensive live-action legacy is how many of these iconic roles, whether they be heroes or villains, have been reimagined and portrayed by numerous actors over the decades. In the case of Corenswet and Alcock asSuperman and Supergirl in the DCU,Gunn’s reboot will be the first time the two Kryptonian heroes have been properly depicted in the same cinematic universe at the same time. Hearing Benoist - who played a vital role in making Supergirl even more popular for the mainstream audience during the Arrowverse era - be thrilled for the DCU showcases how important this legacy is to the actress to this day.
Benoist’s question about whether the Girl of Steel will show up Gunn’s film next month also highlights the uncertainty about the matter, as it seems only time will tell as towhether Alcock’s Supergirl will have a cameo in theSupermanmovie. Even if fans still have to wait till 2026 to see Alcock in theSupergirlmovie,it is also incredibly encouraging to see a former Supergirl actor be so excited and supportive of the Australian star. Alcock’sSupergirlfilm will also mark the first time since 1984 that Kara has had her own movie, following Helen Slater’s Supergirl.

Our Take On Melissa Benoist’s DCU Movie Comments
While her time with DC may have been over for a couple of years now, seeing Benoist championing the House of El to this day is a reminder of why she was also one of the best parts of the Arrowverse. Based on everything that has been revealed so far abouttheSupermanmovie, including its reported budget, Gunn’s DCU installment is set to be one of the most important films of 2025, especially in terms of how the franchise itself evolves going forward. Hopefully, the hard work behindSupermanandSupergirlwill be a huge payoff for DC Studios, and a testament to their respective legacies.

Supergirl made her first appearance in the comics in 1959’s Action Comics #252 and has gone on to become one of DC’s most popular characters. This TV series, which stars Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, first aired on CBS in 2015. It ran on that network for one season, before moving to the CW so it could become part of the Arrowverse - a collection of DC Comics shows that also includes Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, among others. Supergirl has been part of several crossover events between all the series.
