Love it or hate it, Epic has consistently delivered newFortnitecontent to the game’s massive fanbase in the form of cosmetics, emotes, and changes to the map. WhileFortnitehas stirred controversy with its emotesin the past, an all-new addition to the game is sure to be a blast to the past, though whether or not that’s a good thing is up in the air.

Fortniteplayers are now able to Rickroll one another with a new emote that has been added to the game. The emote lets players do Rick Astley’s signature dance as “Never Gonna Give You Up” plays in the background, which will undoubtedly lead to some humiliating deaths for all of the game’s players. Considering all the licensedskins inFortnite, it’s only a matter of time until compilation videos of Stormtroopers Rickrolling unsuspecting victims begin to pop up.

Rickrolling originated back around 2007, with the song itself dating back to 1987. ConsideringFortnite’sskewed appeal to younger generations, there’s a healthy slice of the game’s player base that was born after the meme actually became a thing, which is something of a disturbing thought for those that had to suffer through the meme regularly during the height of its popularity. Without a doubt, Rickrolling will soon see a resurgence, rebranding as aFortnitememein no time at all.

It’s strange seeing so much licensed content, likeFortnite’sHarley Quinn skin, together in the game. In a way, it feels like the early stages ofReady Player One’sOasis, though that taking place inFortnitemay not be what many were imaging while reading the book. Regardless,Fortniteis in pretty uncharted waters for the games industry as a whole right now, and it will be interesting to see where it ends up.

For now though, at least players can take part in the joyful Rickrolling of others, at least until it becomes infuriating to see so regularly. Players will have to learn to deal with the frustration of seeing the emote after the elimination screen, as it likely won’t be going away any time soon.

Fortniteis available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
