The Playground LTM inFortniteis so popular that thedevelopers want to make the mode permanent, but at launch, it did encounter some serious difficulties. When it first launched on June 27, the battle royale game’s servers crashed due to the influx of players, but it was re-launched after a few short days. Now, Epic Games has decided to address exactly what happened when it tried to launch the first time.

As Epic explained,Fortniteuses a “Matchingmaking Services (MMS)” to match players with open games. However, Epic explained that Playground making matches for every four people instead of 100 caused it to filter through 25-100 times as many matches as normal. Epic went on to say, “While we could pack virtual servers a bit tighter per physical CPU for Playground mode, we still had to use 15 times as many servers as we had been running for the other modes. We were able to secure the total server capacity, but it meant the list that each node had to manage was suddenly 15 times as long as well.”

Epic concluded its post-mortem discussion by revealing it learned a lot about its MMS system, as it eventually rolled out the Playground LTM region-by-region in order to offset the massive surge of players. Despite the massive demands of the Playground LTM, Epic still seems poised to bring it back soon since its departure from the Battle Royale game on July 12.

After all, the LTM is great for players who need time to better their skills and wish to avoid the trial-and-error experience of participating in match after match. Moreover, fans were able to make someimpressive creations such as the fan-favoriteBlack Opsmap, Nuketown.

Meanwhile, as players await the return of Playground mode, there is still plenty to be enjoyed in season 5. Right now, players can participate in a special event celebratingFortnite’s first birthdayor attempt the new challenges, but also take joy in knowing that Playground will eventually return.

Fortniteis available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and iOS devices. An Android release is planned for summer 2018.
