Two of the major criticisms levied againstFriday the 13th: The Gameshortly after its initial launch weremajor server problems, followed by the lack of a meaningful variety of content in the base game and post-launch. Eventually, Gun Media and IllFonic got the asymmetrical multiplayer survival horror title running stably and kept it supplied with a bevy of downloadable supplies, but it seems as if further add-ons are coming to an end due to a copyright lawsuit.
To be specific, a legal issue is currently preventing any new movies from the series to be made, as Victor Miller, the original film’s scriptwriter, has claimed that he was not employed when writing the first flick. As such, he’s looking to terminate a grant of rights and reclaim ownership of the property. This means that the future of the franchise is now in the balance, putting Gun Media and IllFonic at a standstill as far as releasing new assets inFriday the 13th: The Gamego.
According to an email from Gun Media to the horror outlet Bloody Disgusting, the company has stated that it has “now been forced to accept that the lawsuit makes future content for the game, including alternate play modes, new playable Jasons and Counselors, and new maps, unfeasible now or in the future.” With this being the case,Uber Jason, the Grendel map, new Jason Kill Packs, fresh clothing, new emotes, and new Counselors have effectively been cancelled indefinitely.
Taking all of this into consideration,Friday the 13th: The Gamefans will surely be severely disappointed to learn of such a situation occurring, as the lawsuit is effectively undermining the creation of new content that keeps the heart of the franchise beating. Hopefully the legal issue will be resolved quickly, but the axing of all future assets forF13: The Gameis definitely a worrying sign to say the least.
