Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ghosts season 4.The season 4 finale ofGhoststied up numerous outstanding stories, while also setting the stage for what could potentially be the biggest plot thread inGhostsseason 5. The spirits of Woodstone Manor, along with Sam (Rose McIver), now must work overtime tosave Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) from the clutches of Hell, all thanks to the dastardly ways of Elias Woodstone (Matt Walsh).
In all the fuss and madness of the season finale, one of the newer and cooler spirits that graced Woodstone Manor is missing completely, as well as her love interest. WithGhostsnow renewed for two more seasons,we’re confident we’ll see more of Joan (Taylor Ortega) and her adventures with Sasappis (Roman Zaragoza) in season five, and we can’t wait.

Joan Was Absent In The Ghosts Season 4 Finale (& So Was Sass)
Their Story Was Buttoned Up Earlier In The Season
Ghostsseason 4’sendinghas some major moments, but one that is missing is an additional interaction between Joan and Sasappis “Sass.” They are central to a season-long thread aboutSasappis' journey to losing his virginity, and the reason for their absence seems simple: their thread is tied off, and they didn’t quite have a place in the finale’s story.
Sass' acknowledgment of his feelings for Joan and about the loss of his virginity in episode 18 wraps up multiple storylines, and there is no more runway to give. With the primary focus on Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) and his book, as well as Jay’s terrible mistake, it made sense to give these characters a bit of a break, making us miss them for a little longer.

Ghosts Season 5 Will Reveal More About Joan’s Ghost Power
Are Her Limitations Like Pete’s, Or Does She Have More Wiggle Room?
Much like the"Tier 1" ghost power of Pete (Richie Moriarty), Joan is capable of leaving the boundaries of the location of her death, allowing her to travel wherever she feels. Unlike Pete’s limited timeframe before he starts to disappear,Joan seems to have a much longer rope on her “roaming” after many years of practice.
Now that their love is in bloom, there’s a significant amount of story to be told about Joan and Sass together, but also more to learn about Joan. Season 5 could provide more information on how exactly she learned to harness her power, where she transitioned, if it’s possible to teach Pete this skill, and most importantly, why part of her life linked her to this ability.

Why Joan Is Such An Exciting Addition To Ghosts
Joan Brings Additional Story Possibilities To Sass' Arc
Arguably, the most important and impactful parts ofGhoststhroughout its four seasons are the stories of the spiritswho inhabit Woodstone Manor. As they explore their afterlife, whether it’s been for 20 years or 1,000, the knowledge they gain about themselves in perceived Purgatory brings the heart of the show front and center.
Beyond the character arcs of the main spirits, Joan brings a fresh, outside-world perspective to the show’s dynamics.
This is why Joan’s addition to the fold is so exciting, as beyond the characters' arcs of the main Woodstone spirits, Joan brings a fresh, outside-world perspective to the show’s afterlife dynamics, which is especially important in navigating one of two budding love stories in season 5.
We get to learn more about her through her spending time with Sass and the rest of the spirits, and whether she’ll ultimately be a protagonistic or an antagonistic force — the latter of which we hope isn’t the case. There’s already enough of that going around Woodstone, and Joan has already been such a blast as a positive figure inGhosts.
