Mr. ShowandBetter Call SaulstarBob Odenkirktook some time during his promotion of theJohn Wick-likeNobody 2to instead give all the violent details about how he’d murder beloved Nintendo mascot Mario. The comedy-writer-turned-action-star is best known for playing Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, in bothBreaking Badand its prequel,Better Call Saul, but seems to have some beef with the iconic mustachioed plumber.
In an interview withIGN(viaEurogamer), Odenkirk was shown numerous images of characters on vacation in their various sequels, including The Brady Bunch, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Kevin McCallister inHome Alone 2. The segment had Odenkirk channeling the violent tendencies of hisNobody 2character, Hutch Mansell (who is on vacation in the upcoming film), to informhow he would fight each character shown to him.

At one point, Odenkirk is shown images of Mario on vacation inSuper Mario Sunshineand in beachwear inSuper Mario Odyssey. Odenkirk says:
“I’ll kill him. I’ll tear that mustache off his face, jam it down his throat, take those goggles, rip them to pieces, and stab him with those. It’s gonna be bloody. Bloody! Know why? Because of the smile, I don’t like the smile. It’s too innocent.”
Bob Odenkirk Has Hilarious Response To Mario Question
The Mushroom Kingdom Hero Doesn’t Stand A Chance
The whole interview segment is a clever spin onNobody 2’s bloody premise, and Odenkirk plays along brilliantly, but the hypothetical fight against Mario is a clear highlight. Many of the proposed fights are glorified segues into talking about the production ofNobody 2, such as Odenkirk admittingHome Alone’s Kevin would have the upper hand before talking about howhe personally enjoys that kind of straightforward action in movies: “simple fighting, like throwing bricks at people’s heads – that’s my favorite thing.”
But shortly after Mario pops up on-screen, lounging on a beach with hisgood friend Princess Peach, Odenkirk quickly says, “I’ll kill him.” Going so far as to describe exactly how he’d kill Mario – by ripping off his mustache and stabbing him with shattered goggles –it’s hilariously easier for Odenkirk to play along when it’s a video game character. It stands out from his very heartfelt apprehension about fighting Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold or Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister.
Why Bob Odenkirk Hates Mario So Much In Mario Sunshine
“I Don’t Like The Smile”
Odenkirk’s rationale for so violently killing Mario is equally funny, claimingthe plumber’s smile is “too innocent.“Aside from stomping an untold number of Goombas into oblivion, Mario does epitomize Nintendo’s family-forward tone and appearance. He’s nearly always chipper, and his cartoonish appearance has helped him stay eternally popular.
Perhaps Odenkirk simply has something against video game characters; as soon as he’s shown an image of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles inTMNT 3: The Manhattan Project, he says, “They’re all dead. I’m taking them out.“Bob Odenkirkhas been exceptionally influential to comedy, and his fame only continues to grow, but that might not be the case if he can somehow make good on his threats against Mario.
