The trailer forOutlanderseason 8 has teased a critical book story, but I’m a bit concerned by what the clipdidn’tshow. Starz unveiled the first official trailer for the eighth and final season ofOutlanderat the San Diego Comic-Con, for whichScreenRantwas in attendance. This teaser came with the reveal of the release window for the upcomingOutlanderseason 8, also listed in the trailer as early 2026.

The start ofthe trailer forOutlanderseason 8included dozens of clips from past seasons, outlining Jamie and Claire’s overarching love story. We see the couple’s initial meeting, their adventures in France and the Caribbean, and some of their most desperate moments together. There’s a lot of emphasis here that this is the final chapter of Starz’s Romantacy TV series.

Claire with Faith in countlander

It’s only in the final moments of theOutlanderseason 8trailer that we see clips from the coming episodes. Jamie and Claire are significantly greyer compared to earlier seasons, andthe trailer sees the couple return to their home at Fraser’s Ridge, just asOutlanderseason 7 foreshadowed. Brianna, Roger, and their children also arrive at the Ridge, and they bring with them an intriguing feature of theOutlanderbooks.

The Trailer For Outlander Season 8 Includes Jamie’s Frank Randall Revelation From The Books

Outlander’s Final Season Is Still Adapting This Critical Story

In theOutlanderseason 8 trailer, Jamie sits in bed reading over a modern book, which we ultimately see was written by none other than historian Frank Randall. He tells Claire that Frank had written about the Revolutionary War’s impact on the backcountry, notably Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina. Additionally,Frank recorded that the Ridge’s namesake, James Fraser, perished in the war.

This is, naturally, an intriguing tease forOutlanderseason 8, since the coming episodes will clearly follow the characters as they attempt to change Jamie’s fate. Of course, fans of theOutlanderbooks will be familiar with this plotline, since Frank’s book and Jamie’s recorded death are significant features of Diana Gabaldon’s ninth book in her series,Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

Since season 7 ignored Frank’s book, I was worried that Outlander season 8 wouldn’t include the plotline surrounding Jamie’s historically recorded death.

It’s a relief to see thatOutlanderseason 8 is going to cover this story, especially since season 7 cut out a great deal regarding Frank Randall’s book. We saw Brianna find it on the shelf at Lallybroch, but that was about the extent of it. In theOutlanderbooks,Brianna had found a letter from Frankinside the book that was critical to the plot. The TV show, however, completely overlooked this.

Outlander Season 7 Poster

In theOutlanderbooks, Frank’s book makes it clear that he knew before his death that Claire would again travel back in time and live at Fraser’s Ridge with Jamie. The fact that he published his findings before his death suggests that he had intended for Claire and Brianna to discover this information one day.

Since season 7 ignored Frank’s book, I was worried thatOutlanderseason 8 wouldn’t include the plotline surrounding Jamie’s historically recorded death. This worry was reinforced by the cliffhanger twist that Faith Fraser might have lived, indicating to me that this plotline would take the canon version’s place. The SDCC trailer has assuaged fears. However, interestingly, it ignored the Faith twist.

Outlander Season 8’s Trailer Ignores Season 7’s Faith Fraser Twist

Frank’s Warning Will Have To Share The Stage With The Faith Twist Eventually

The last time we sawJamie and ClaireinOutlanderseason 7, they were reeling over the possibility that Faith Fraser might have survived the events of season 2. This was a massive twist, and one that never happened in theOutlanderbooks. The fact that this was the biggest reveal of our most recent episodes implied that Faith’s mystery would be the focus of season 8, but now I’m not so sure.

I had expected the trailer forOutlanderseason 8 to give us a tease regarding the truths of Fraith’s story. We might have seen Claire searching for answers, or Jamie telling her to forget the whole thing and move on. Perhaps Master Raymond’s voice, providing some hints, would be heard. However, Starz instead focused its trailer on the bigGo Tell the Bees That I’m Goneplotline.

It Will Be A Challenge For Outlander Season 8 To Balance Focus Between Canon & New Stories

Outlander Has Limited Time To Do All Plotlines Justice

Of course, just because the Faith twist wasn’t featured in the firstOutlanderseason 8 trailer doesn’t mean that it won’t be a feature of the coming episodes. It absolutely will be, and Claire figuring out the details of this mystery is sure to be key to the series' resolution. What worries me is thatOutlanderseason 8 now has two massive plotlines to work with, and not much time to do it.

Outlanderseason 8 will only have 10 episodes, and there’s a lot to wrap up in this time. Not only do Jamie and Claire need a satisfying resolution, but Brianna and Roger, Ian and Rachel, Lord John and William, and a handful more must get their own big endings. It will be quite a challenge to achieve all of this, give Faith’s mystery enough attention, and still make Jamie’s death twist pay off.

Outlander season 8 will only have 10 episodes, and there’s a lot to wrap up in this time.

Pacing has always been a bit of an issue in theOutlanderseries, so the introduction of this new story—canon or not—has me concerned. However, if this coming season can pull everything off, it could easily beOutlander’s most exciting installment yet. It will just take a meticulous balance.
