Pokémon Legends: Z-Amarks the return of Mega Evolutions, powerful forms for Pokémon that go beyond their final transformations. An incredibly popular mechanic from past games, Mega Evolutions have been dormant for a while, but their return comes with new Mega variants of Pokémon that have never been seen before. While there are several great candidates for new Mega Evolutions, I believe one Pokémon stands out as a clear choice.
While very little is known aboutthe roster of Pokémon inLegends: Z-A, we do know at least which Mega Evolutions have been confirmed. Old favorites like Charizard X & Y have already been announced alongside Mega Kangaskhan, Gyarados, Ampharos, Gardevoir, Sableye, Altaria, and Absol. It is also likely thatthe final evolution of the game’s three starters will also have new Mega Evolutionsthat have never been in other titles.

Hydreigon Would Be An Easy Mega Evolution For Pokémon Legends Z-A
Four Heads Might Be Better Than Three
Out of all the Pokémon a new Mega Evolution could go to, I think that Hydreigon would be one of the best options possible. ThisDragon/Dark-type from Gen 5 is a popular Pokémon in many of the games it appears in, mainly for being the ace creature of the villain Ghetsis inPokémon Black & White. Hydreigon is considered a Pseudo-Legendary, similar to Metagross, Garchomp, or Tyranitar from previous Generations.
WithLegends: Z-Areturning to Lumiose CityfromPokémon X & Y, it might be time to highlight the sinister hydra once again.Hydreigon has always held a revered status for being an extremely hard Pokémon to evolveinto compared to others. Evolving from Zweilous at an astounding Level 64, Hydreigon takes time to acquire, so a Mega Evolution for it could elevate its seldom-seen status even further.

While Hydreigon is originally from the Unova region, it has made appearances in Kalos and Galar in games past its debut. WithLegends: Z-Ataking place in Kalos, it is very possible that Hydreigon is seen again in some way.
Even from my complete bias toward what I believe to be one of Pokémon’s coolest Dragon-types,Hydreigon’s design invites a far easier Mega Evolution to create. When evolving from Deino and Zweilous, the former Pokémon gained a new head on the latter’s body. When turning into Hydreigon, Zweilous becomes a flying hydra, with multiple wings and three heads searching for destruction wherever it travels.
A Mega Evolution for Hydreigon could simply increase the number of heads, making a four, five, or even six-headed Pokémon. This would further deepen the reference to the Lernaean Hydra from Greek mythology that Hydreigon is somewhat inspired by, creating a unique transformation that is memorable to players.
Adding More Heads To Hydreigon Won’t Take Away From The Pokémon’s Cool Factor
Dark And Dragon-Types Tend To Always Stick The Landing
Although adding too many heads to a theoretical Hydreigon Mega Evolution would make the Pokémon look goofy, the striking core design will make any alterations hard to mess up. As both a Dark and Dragon-type,the Mega Evolution could give it more draconic traits or make it look far more malicious by leaning into its Dark-type tendencies. Either way, Hydreigon will have that edge that makes it stand out from other Pokémon.
An easy way to include a Hydreigon Mega Evolution inLegends: Z-Ais to have the Pokémon be used by a major villain in the game’s story, similar to Ghetsis. The eventual battle with that villain could lead to them using Hydreigon and Mega Evolving it to present a harder challenge to the player.
The downright sinister look of Hydreigon already sets it apart fromother Dragon and Dark-type Pokémon, with its splint wings and heads of arms pairing with a crowned frill for a striking appearance.Any Mega Evolution that keeps the core traits of Hydreigon will likely be received well, even by those who don’t feel strongly toward the Pokémon already.
Much like its initial appearance,Hydreigon could create a more diverse selection of Mega Evolutionsfor players to choose from. IfLegends: Z-Aapproaches Mega Evolution like past games have, players will only have one chance to Mega Evolve a Pokémon on their team during a battle. If anyone does get a Hydreigon, its unique typing, infamous history, and difficult evolution requirements could make players want to Mega Evolve it regardless of its transformed design.
Many Mega Evolutions are bright and colorful Pokémon, with only a few exceptions, like Mega Houndoom, Sharpedo, or Mawile. By including a Mega Evolution for Hydreigon inPokémon Legends: Z-A, it would stand out instantly, becoming an easy and sensible addition to the storied roster of Pokémon designs seen in many games.
