The director ofRogue One, Gareth Edwards, has a controversial opinion on whether it is the best DisneyStar Warsfilm. In terms of theranking ofStar Warsmovies, George Lucas' original trilogy installments are usually at the top of the pile. Disney’s efforts are more controversial, yetRogue Oneis an almost universally lovedStar Warsmovie.

Despite this claim from the fans,Rogue One’s own director, Gareth Edwards, revealed toBusiness Insiderthat he does not agree. When made aware ofRogue One’s fan-imposed title as the best DisneyStar Warseffort, Edwards stated:“I don’t agree with it, but I appreciate it.I’m very grateful that people say nice things.”

This is certainly an interesting reply, as many in the modernStar Warsfanbase would find that a controversial take. The intense division caused by Disney’sStar Warssequels has ledRogue Oneto become more and more beloved as time has gone on. If the online chatter is anything to go by, Edwards is going against the grain.

Why Doesn’t Gareth Edwards Think Rogue One Is The Best?

There Could Be Many Reasons

The most interesting question raised in Edwards' comment is why he does not thinkRogue Oneis Disney’s bestStar Warsfilm. Those online would argue that it is the best simply by default, given that online discourse would have one thinking theStar Warssequels are abominations. With Edwards, though, the answer could be more interesting.

After all,Rogue Onewas the subject of intense reshoots. The creator ofStar Wars’best TV show,Andor, was hired to rework large parts ofRogue One’s story in a lengthy reshoot process. This process remained secret for a while, yet Gilroy outlined thescale ofRogue One’s reshoots, likening the movie, at the time of his hiring, to a corpse.

Gareth Edwards also appeared in a cameo role inStar Wars: The Last Jedi. This could indicate this is his favorite DisneyStar Warsmovie overRogue One.

Edwards has always been respectful ofRogue One’s changes, insisting he was involved the entire time. If Gilroy is to be believed, though, Edwards would undoubtedly have a different perception ofRogue One. The film Edwards thought he was making may have been entirely different from the final product, contributing to his view thatRogue Oneis not Disney’s bestStar Warsmovie.

Our Take On Rogue One

Rogue One Is Still A Great Movie

On a personal level, I agree with Edwards. I hold the opinion that another DisneyStar Warsmovie is the best of the bunch, an opinion that would certainly be dubbed controversial. Nevertheless,Rogue Oneis still excellent. For what it is worth, I thinkRogue Oneis Disney’s second-bestStar Warsmovie.

It has excellent performances, was stunningly shot, has all theStar Warsnods one could ask for, and also has the best space battle in the franchise. All that said, opinions are opinions.Rogue Oneis great, but I do not think it quite matches the highs of another DisneyStar Warsmovie, and it seems as though Edwards may agree.
