AsJurassic World Rebirthcontinues to stomp through the box office, it just passed another monster epic.Rebirthhas earned some positive reviews, withScreenRant’s Mary Kassel calling itthe franchise’s"most meaningful movie in years,“while praising the performances from Jonathan Bailey (Dr. Henry Loomis), Mahershala Ali (Duncan Kincaid), and Scarlett Johansson (Zora Bennett).
According to a report byVariety,Rebirthtook the #2 spot at the box office this weekend, earning $23 million domestically after a 43% drop. With that total, it has earned$276 million domestically and $647 million globally. It is only in its third week at the box office and has been facing off against strong competition.

This total does helpRebirthdefeat another major competitor, as it has officially earned more than Peter Jackson’s own monster movie.RebirthbeatKing Kong(2005), which ushered in just $218 million domestically and $557 million worldwide in its lifetime.Rebirthhas earned nearly $100 million more, despite failing to live up to previousJurassic Worldreleases.
What This Means For Jurassic World Rebirth
King Kong Can’t Stand Up To Dinosaurs
This is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment, especially at the modern box office. Only three other movies (Ne Zha 2,Lilo & Stitch, andA Minecraft Movie) haveearned over $600 million this year, and only two of them came from Hollywood. Any film earning this much at the recent box office is excellent news.
Unfortunately, the movie is still struggling to live up to previous franchise releases. Despite grossing $1 billion or more for each release worldwide, the average gross fortheJurassic Worldfranchiseisdecreasing with every new release. None of the films has ever earned more than its predecessor, which is a worrying sign:

Even when compared toKing Kong,Rebirthis still somewhat struggling. When adjusting for inflation,King Kongearned around $942 million globally, whichRebirthwill not come close to matching. Though there is still time to improve at the box office, it is about to face even stronger competition in week 4.
Our Take On Jurassic World’s Success
This Has Been A Strong Run
This has undoubtedly been a strong run, especially when considering the other recent releases at the box office.Supermanhas been dominantsince its release, blowing the dinosaurs out of the water. Next week should also see the release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’sThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, whichshould provide additional competition.
With so many factors working against it, this performance has been impressive, and Universal should be proud of its newest release. While the theatrical landscape has changed considerably since the pandemic, the love for dinosaur movies has never faded, andJurassic World Rebirthis proof.
