A surprisingLaw & Order: SVUseason 27 premiere update reveals that one star may not actually be leaving.Law & Order: SVUseason 26concluded in a suitably dramatic style, but left more than a few unanswered questions. With season 27 entering development, it was announced that two regular cast members would not be returning to the show.
PerDeadline, reports confirm that the opening episode ofLaw & Order: SVUis set to bring back Octavio Pisano’s Joe Velasco, just weeks after it was reported the star would depart. Pisano, who joined the cast in season 23, was set to leave alongside Kate Silva co-star Juliana Aidén Martinez, but he will return for this fall’s season opener.

What This Means For Law & Order: SVU
Velasco Might Get A Stay Of Execution
It seems that Pisano might not be leaving the show after all, and the fact he’s scheduled to appear in ‘season 27’s premiere might mean that Velasco gets a stay of execution. What makes this all the more confusing is that theLaw & Order: SVUseason 26 finalegave Velasco one of the best send-offs in the show’s history.
Now, it might be the case that he is only set to return for the premiere episode, to book-end the character’s time on the show, and show how Velasco is getting on following his promotion to detective second grade. Or, it may be that Pisano’s departure has actually been reversed, and he could return to the season in a regular capacity.

Our Take On Velasco’s Season 27 Appearance
It’s Likely To Be A One & Done Type Deal
The most likely outcome is that this is a one-and-done type deal, where Velasco returns to the show for the premiere episode, and then his arc’s done. This is uncommon for premiere episodes, but it’s something that could be key toLaw & Order: SVUseason 27, and might even play a prominent part in the storyline to the opening episode.
There could be a crossover case involving Velasco, and this brings him into contact with his former colleagues, especially if there is a time jump. It will also be interesting to see whether Martinez makes an appearance in SVU season 27 as well, especially considering the fact that Kate Silva got pretty much no send-off at all as a character.

Both characters still have plenty to offer the show, and there are great ways both could be brought back toLaw & Order: SVUin a way that helps cap off thier arcs on the show.
