NetherRealm Studios has busily been revealing new characters forMortal Kombat 11over the past week. First cameKano’s announcement, one ofMortal Kombat’s most recognized fighters. Then came Kabal and D’Vorah right after the other in the past twenty-four hours, bringing the total number of confirmed fighters up to eleven.Mortal Kombatboss Ed Boon says that NetherRealm isn’t stopping there, and that fans should expect more “classic fighter” announcements soon.
Ed Boon’s comments come in response to a growing cacophony of requests for specificMortal Kombatcharacters from the franchise’s past. From Goro to Liu Kang, fans are hoping that their favorites will make the cut forMortal Kombat 11’s roster. Boon sympathizes with that sentiment, leading him to use his popular Twitter account to encourage fans to be patient. The price of building up hype forMortal Kombat 11’s roster one character at a time is that a full unveiling will take time.
Unfortunately, Boon’s Twitter post doesn’t confirm or tease any specificMortal Kombatcharacter announcements. His exact wording says that there are, “SO many ‘soon to be konfirmed’ classic fighter announcements koming.“Mortal Kombat Xfeatured an impressive ten new fighters, twelve if you count DLC, so perhapsMortal Kombat 11will focus more on returning to the franchise’s roots.
WithMortal Kombat 11prominently featuring time travel, care of new character Kronika, it would be a shame not to bring back as many familiar faces as possible. With over 70 fighters fromMortal Kombat’s past to pick from, NetherRealm has its work cut out for itself.
For those unaware, the three fighters that were announced over the past week–that is, Kano, Kabal, and D’Vorah–join with the eight fighters confirmed as part ofMortal Kombat 11’s announcement. Those fighters include Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Raiden, Skarlet, Baraka, and new fighter Geras. The final confirmed character isShao Kahn, who is a pre-order bonus. That’s about half the size ofMortal Kombat’s launch roster of 24 fighters. There are plenty of announcements left to come.
Mortal Kombat 11releases August 16, 2025 for the PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
