Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronices Releases Later This Year For PS4 & PS5
Release Date: July 14, 2025
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chroniclesbrings the classic tactical RPG to modern platforms with two separate versions of the game. The Enhanced version, according toPlayStation Blog, has"fully voiced dialogue, an optimized and updated UI, graphical improvements, and a number of other quality of life features, including the more accessible “Squire” difficulty setting"designed for newcomers to the tactics genre. The updated UI in particular will help modernize the game, with more information presented and a turn order added to one edge of the screen.
The Classic version is nearly a straight port of the original game, but includes the translation created for its previousThe War of the Lionsre-release on the PlayStation Portable in 2007.This translation is widely considered far superior to the original, which was heavily criticized uponFF Tactics' original release a decade prior. The Classic version supports high resolutions and wide-screen, and has the convenience of autosave, but is more or less the original experience.

A Blind Spot For The Famed Series
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chroniclesis a great comeback for the series, and the improvements in the Enhanced version look great, but it’s still odd that Square Enix hasn’t continued the series with a proper new entry. We passedTactics' 25th anniversarya few years ago, andthe series seems like it fills a niche left vacant in the iconicFinal Fantasyoeuvre. Especially with the resurgence of turn-based and tactical games – not to mention how perfectly the art style oftactical RPGTriangle Strategywould fit – it feels like we’re long overdue forFinal Fantasyto re-enter the tactical arena.
The Ivalice Chroniclesis an unsurprising step from Square Enix, though. Many classicFinal Fantasygames have been revamped in thePixel Remasterseries, andFinal Fantasy 7is so far the only one to make a huge comeback with theRemaketrilogy. The Ivalice Chroniclesmay not satiate those hoping for a brand-newFinal Fantasy Tacticsgame, but here’s hoping it’s just the beginning of the series' comeback.
