Sunderedis an upcoming metroidvania game with what looks like a great deal of promise. A newly released game trailer from Thunder Lotus Games finally offered details on the launch of the game, which will take place on July 28th for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs as well as PS4.
Sundered showed up as one ofE3’s best indie gamesthis year, with a dark cartoon style, smooth action animation, and the nostalgic feel that comes with any game in the metroidvania genre. The trailer suggests an interesting story, as the protagonist explores a dark world which she can resist the energies of or embrace for enhanced abilities.
On top of having the platformer fundamentals of a classicMetroidorCastlevaniagame,Sunderedalso appears to feature elements of the bullet hell genre, with all sort of projectiles swarming the player along with relentless streams of small enemies. Part of the style also sees the character dwarfed by sprawling levels and massive enemies.
While the confirmation of the release date doesn’t bring the game any closer to launch, since it was already slated for July, it’s good not to see a delay coming for this game. The hand-drawn art style and colorful levels look amazing, and will surely make this game a must-see for any indie or metroidvania game fans.
The adventure offered by the game certainly looks like a fun one, and there seems to be a good deal of replayability thanks to the option for players to take on the game’s dark energies and gain new powers, or to reject them and play the game without enhancements, similar to the wayDishonoredgave players the option to reject supernatural powers for a more challenging playthrough.
Even if Sundered doesn’t manage to step out from under the shadows ofMetroidandCastlevania, the artwork put into the game’s design likely will earn it a great deal of praise. It may even help tide over lovers of hand-drawn art styles in video games as they await the long-delayedCuphead.Since it is also coming for the PS4, it gives Sony fans something to look forward to as well, sinceCupheadis anXbox One and PC exclusive.
