WhenNieroriginally released in the west back in 2010, it underwent one major change when it was localized. Whereas the Japanese version, titledNier Replicant, featured a young brother character caring for his sickly little sister as the main protagonist, the western release,Nier Gestalt, instead starred a grizzled and much older father character. Theremake releasing this monthwill adhere to the original vision for the game, meaning western players will get to experience the game with the brother protagonist, but there has been some disappointment from those who were attached to Dad Nier.

However, while it at first looks as if Dad Nier is being omitted from the remake entirely,Nier Replicant’s producer Yosuke Saito teased in a recent interview with PCGamesN that the game will have something for fans of that version of the character to enjoy. He obviously didn’t go into specifics, only saying that those who played the original game ten years ago will be more than satisfied.

Previously, Square Enix has said that there is no option to switch between the two versions of the protagonist. But, there has been some speculation that the dad character will be included when one of thepre-order bonus PlayStation avatars was censored. The censored avatar is clearly meant to depict him, leading some to theorize that he may be an unlockable of some kind.

Saito also teased other brand-new additions to the remake, such as some connections to the sequel gameNier: Automata(which is set thousands of years after the first game), extra story content not present in the original, and an entirely new boss fight. Saito describes this boss fight as being “heartrendingly sad but unbelievably powerful,” which suggests that it’s a secret boss that players will need to actively hunt down.

Nier Replicantreleases for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 23.
