There are multiple running jokes in theOverwatchcommunity revolving around the game’s residentcyborg ninja Genji. There’s one about how Genji players are always begging for heals, and then there’s another about how Genji always seems to get Play of the Game. There definitely seems to be some truth to the latter, as it seems Genji can even win Play of the Game when he’s dead.
A clip is making the rounds of anOverwatchplayer named Wave winning Play of the Game as Genji, even though he does literally nothing to earn it. The Play of the Game starts with a look at the recently deceased Genji’s screen, and then it shows him respawn, put a couple of sprays on the ground, and dash back to the control point in the center of the map.

It’s unclear exactly how this happened, but it’s possible that Genji’s Play of the Game-worthy moment occurred right before his death or immediately after the clip ended, but the game failed to record the correct footage. It’s also possible that virtually nothing of note happened during the entire match and the spraying and dashing was enough to give Genji Play of the Game.
The most likely scenario is that this is just an example ofOverwatch’sPlay of the Game featurenot working properly. Most of the time it works very well, or at least doesn’t give players Play of the Game while they’re dead, but hiccups can be expected every now and then.
Besides blatant mistakes like the one seen here, there are times when players may disagree with whatOverwatchselects for Play of the Game. For example, sometimes it seems like the Play of the Game highlights a relatively unimportant moment in the match when there were instances when players racked up even more kills or did something that was more important to their team getting the victory. So while Play of the Game does seem to work properly most of the time, there is definitely room for improvement.
