The cast and creators ofPercy Jackson and the Olympianshave confirmed that season 2 will feature a monumental but exciting change fromRick Riordan’s original book series. The biggest factor behind the success of Disney+‘sPercy Jackson and the Olympiansis that it’s so much more book-accurate than the universally panned feature film adaptations of the 2010s.

Despite the legion of book purists out there, however,Entertainment Weekly’s recent feature onPercy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 2includes the cast and creators’ excitement about a major change the show is making from the books. While this might sound scary, their enthusiasm is genuinely warranted. This is one adjustment I can get behind.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Won’t Just Be Told From Percy’s Perspective (Unlike The Books)

We’ll Learn More About The Demigods' World

Percy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 2 won’t just follow Percy and Annabeth as they head into the titular Sea of Monsters. We’ll also get to see Luke’s (Charlie Bushnell) destruction of Camp Half-Blood, Grover’s journey to find the Greek god Pan, and Clarisse’s (Dior Goodjohn) epic quest to find the Golden Fleece with her ghostly war veteran army in tow.

This means thatwe’ll be witnessing events in the demigods' shrouded world completely separate from Percy’s experience. He may be the titular character, and he may be the son of one of the Big Three, but the overall story is so much bigger than him. There’s more than one point of view character in the new season.

Star Leah Jeffrieshad this to say about the change when she spoke toEntertainment Weekly:

“I love the first season, but it was just the three of us fighting huge monsters. This season, it’s several quests going on at once. It almost felt like everything was a complete upgrade.”

While the first series of Percy Jackson books is solely told from Percy’s first-person point of view, the second series,Heroes of Olympus, features multiple third-person POVs. As such, including additional perspectives isn’t exactly new in Riordan’s storytelling world.Using this technique in the TV show will completely change our perception of theSea of Monstersstory and all futurePercy Jackson and the Olympiansseasons, however.

Percy Jackson Season 2’s Multiple POVs Highlight A Harsh Reality Of The Books

Percy Jackson Is An Unreliable Narrator

Percy Jackson is a great character. He’s funny, brave, and loyal to a fault. He’s an undeniable hero. That doesn’t mean he’s an objective observer, however. All we know from the books (and to a lesser degree, inPercy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 1) is what Percy has told us or deigned to show us.

Percy Jackson is a great character. He’s funny, brave, and loyal to a fault. He’s an undeniable hero. That doesn’t mean he’s an objective observer, however.

He may be a demigod prodigy, but he’s not a reliable narrator. His feelings understandably cloud his judgment. Dior Goodjohn, who plays Clarisse in the show, explained that Riordan’s books are essentially just"Percy’s journal,“and that"it’s almost as if it’s the unreliable narrator’s version of what happened.“Instead,Percy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 2 will show us what"really happened"while Percy was away.

This is an exciting prospect. In a fantasy narrative as epic as this one, it’s only logical to explore more corners of the imagined world. Percy isn’t the only demigod being targeted by the Greek deities, after all. There’s a larger conspiracy afoot, and I, for one, can’t wait to find out how the other demigods and Greek myths handle themselves in the upcoming season ofPercy Jackson and the Olympians.

Percy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 2 premieres exclusively on Disney+ on June 19, 2025.
