At theIt’s Always Sunny20th Anniversary Panel, attended by Screen Rant on July 1,Rob McElhenney revealedthat he thinks the fact that Dennis & Mac are still roommates today is one of the strongest long-running gags. What Rob McElhenney’s Comment Means
It’s Always Sunny Has Aged Like Fine Wine
McElhenney is undoubtedly correct that this joke has only improved over time. When the characters were in their late 20s in season 1, it was bizarre to see them living in this space. Now, in their late 40s,it’s both horrifying and hilarious that this remains a largely unspoken part of the series.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’shigh-concept humor has allowed for some of the best jokes in the series to maintain momentum over time without much emphasis. The series plays off the logic of sitcom television, allowing them to maintain the same bar space and continuously commit evil deeds with minimal consequences.

This style of humor continues to land with younger audiences, who enjoy the absurd play on classic tropes. As silly and seemingly chaotic as the show plays, it’s evident that there’s an intelligent craft that goes into each season, allowing for details to take shape and grow increasingly humorous over time. This is just a fun example.
Our Take On Rob McElhenney’s Comment
McElhenney Left Out The Best Part Of His Own Joke
I’m in complete agreement that Mac and Dennis living in the same apartment after all these years is a hilarious bit, but I think they left out the best part of it. Not only do Mac and Dennis still live in the same room, but the apartment burned down at one point, then was rebuilt in the same way.
“The Gang Squashes Their Beefs"is theIt’s Always Sunnyseason 9 finale, and the Gang’s attempts to squash beefs on Thanksgiving left the apartment in ruins, forcing them to live with Dee for two seasons. In season 12,they moved back in, only to find that Mac had rebuilt it exactly how it was.
As ofIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’smore recent seasons, the only difference to this apartment is the addition of the Ass Pounder 4000 workout bike. This was brought in by Mac, who assumed he and Dennis would continue sharing a bed after doing so at Dee’s place for so long, hinting at another great, long-running unspoken gag.
