Beloved ’80s action-comedyMidnight Runis officially getting a sequel, starring and produced by actress Regina Hall. Robert De Niro, who starred in the originalUniversalfilm, will also serve as a producer on the sequel.

Directed by Martin Brest,Universal’sMidnight Runwas released in 1988 and starred De Niro as a bounty hunter who’s tasked with tracking down a hapless mob accountant played by the late Charles Grodin. However, Grodin’s accountant claims to be deathly afraid of flying, so the two disagreeable men must travel across the country on a high-stakes road trip as they’repursued by the FBIand vicious Las Vegas Mobster who’s out for blood.

Plot details for theMidnight Runsequel are being kept under wraps at the moment, but It has been confirmed that Hall will star and produce alongside Jesse Collins whileBrooklyn Nine-NinewriterAeysha Carr will pen the script. However, It’s unclear how the new film will connect to the original. De Niro is confirmed to be serving as a producer on the sequel, but there’s no word on whether he will be reprising his role from the original film. It’s possible that the new movie will feature Hall as a brand new character, perhaps a new bounty hunter who’s saddled with another difficult bounty played by a popular comedic actor.

Midnight Runis widely considered to be a staple of the buddy action-comedy genre. Along with other ’80s action comedies such asLethal Weapon,the film laid the groundwork for dozens of buddy movies, including theRush Hourfilms and theFast and Furiousspin-offHobbs and Shaw.While there have been several less than desirable TV movie sequels, a film sequel has long been in the works.
