George R. R. Martin, the author behind the acclaimedA Song of Ice and Firefantasy novels adapted into the HBO showGame of Thrones, recently confirmed that he was consulting on a video game out of Japan, adding fuel to the fire thatMartin was working with From Softwareon a new project. Since then, the rumor mill has been hard at work, with this collaboration between GRRM and theDark SoulsandSekiro: Shadows Die Twicedev rumored to be titled ‘Great Rune’.
Great Runeis rumored to beFrom Software’s next game, with an official announcement reportedly happening at E3 2019, yet very little exists to substantiate the existence of the game. A mysterious subreddit for the game recently appeared online, but now it appears thatSekiro: Shadows Die Twicemay also hint atGreat Rune’s existence. It’s worth adding that From Software is known to hide hints in its video games, as there was a hiddenSekiroreference inBloodborneas well.
InSekiro’s game files (discovered by modder TKGP), there is a strange network path that begins with N:\GR, but while this may not seem like much, it could very well prove to be a serious hint. This is because From Software always begins its network paths with a different abbreviation for each game, withSekiro’s being N:\NTC, so this network path would then be alluding to a new game. It bears the same initials asGreat Rune, but it could also be misleading.
The network abbreviation forSekirodoes not bear any real connection to the title ofSekiro: Shadows Die Twice(NTC vs. SSDT), so the network path forGreat Runebeing its initials seems unlikely in comparison. However, there have been rumors thatGreat Runewas simply a code name for From Software’s next project, meaning there could be more here.
Rumors concerningcharacters and story for From Software’s new gamehave also been circulating, suggesting that it will have three playable characters and be set during a 100-year civil war. Of course, we’ll have to wait for E3 2019 for any real confirmation aboutGreat Runeand any of its details.
