Relive Alan Partridge’s World Cup Countdown ’94
In keeping with Hamster’srecent sporting re-releases, today sees SNK’s football (or “soccer,” if you’d prefer) sequel,Super Sidekicks 2, return to the pitch on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Released in Spring of 1994, probably to cash-in on the upcoming USA-hosted World Cup,Super Sidekicks 2was made available in arcades and on the Neo Geo platform. A fairly standard but fun football title, players pick from a huge selection of International teams and compete in a non-FIFA approved “World Championship.” My original tournament, do not steal.

Super Sidekicks 2introduced new rules in keeping with The Beautiful Game, as well as the addition of fouls, penalty kick tie-breakers and golden goals. The control system was given an overhaul to allow control over multiple team members, and the size of the goals themselves was reduced.
Of all the World Cups I’ve lived through, U.S.A ’94 sticks out the most. Maybe it was Diana Ross missing her shot during the opening ceremony, maybe it wasthe amazing coverageon UK comedy showThe Day Todayby Alan Partridge, or maybe it was just that dopey dog mascot, Striker. Funnily enough, I don’t actually remember any of the matches.

Anyway, if you want to relieveWorld CupWorld Tournament ’94, thenSuper Sidekicks 2is available now on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, priced around $8.
