It seemsStar Warshas learned a critical lesson thatSuperman(2025) director and DC co-CEOJames Gunnunderstands well, and that’s whyStar Wars’upcoming moviesare actually going to work. It’s true thatStar Warsmovies and TV showshave struggled over the years, reallysince Disney boughtStar Wars, although the movies in particular have been rocky.

Installments likeSolo: A Star Wars StoryandStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerfaced intense backlash and are considered some ofStar Wars’worst movies. That history, combined with how unpredictableStar Wars’new movies have been regarding whether they’re even coming, has been concerning. Yet,James Gunn’s recent insights suggestStar Warsis on the right track now.

James Gunn’s Most Important Lesson Shows What’s Going On With Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm’s Slow Rollout Of Movies May Actually Be Very Good News

The uncertainty aboutStar Wars’new movies, particularly in terms of release dates and why the movies seem to be taking so long, has been of concern in recent years, even after Star Wars Celebration 2025, when some updates were given. However, James Gunn’s recent interview has provided a very different perspective.

PerThe Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn spoke about his opinion that the film industry is dying and what he believes is contributing to that death. Gunn explained:

“I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies. It’s not because of home screens getting so good…The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.”

This insight specifically suggests that the film industry is doing itself harm by prioritizing release dates over fully fleshed-out and prepared screenplays, which is certainly somethingStar Warshas struggled with in recent years. In fact, one of the biggestthings that went wrong withThe Rise of Skywalkerwas a rushed story.

Looking atStar Wars’future from Gunn’s perspective, then, the very slow rollout of new movies may be a good sign for Lucasfilm. It’s possible that, as Gunn articulated, Lucasfilm recognized the problems with pushing out movies before they’re really ready and course-corrected by slowing down their releases.

Star Wars' Delays Leave Me More Confident For The Future

If Lucasfilm Really Is Heeding This Warning, That’s Very Good News…Especially For One Specific Movie

There’s little getting around the fact that the sequel trilogy was generally not well-received by audiences, even as I think some (though certainly not all) of that criticism was unfair. Legitimacy of that backlash aside, though,it’s incredibly important forStar Warsto get Rey’s new movie right, and that has me particularly excited about this new perspective on Lucasfilm.

Rey’s movie, rumored to be titledStar Wars: New Jedi Order, was announced years ago, but updates have been few and far between, which had many wondering if it was being scrapped. However, given James Gunn’s insights, the slow progress onNew Jedi Ordercould meanStar Warsis taking getting this movie right seriously, and that’s good news.

While I won’t go so far as to sayStar Wars’future depends on this movie, it’s a hugely important project in terms of redirecting the ship. Hopefully, these slower movie releases meanStar Warshas learned the very lesson James Gunn described, and we will get movies that come out a bit slower but are much better.

Cast

Superman (2025): Superman follows the dual life of Clark Kent, a journalist in Metropolis, as he endeavors to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Set against a backdrop of personal discovery, the film explores his journey of identity as he navigates his existence in a complex world.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order

The tenth mainline installment in the Star Wars franchise is the first movie to follow the sequel trilogy, where Mark Hamill’s Luke, Carrie Fisher’s Leia, and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo gave their final farewell. After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, development on a direct sequel had become dormant as Disney shifted focus on other parts of the galaxy, namely, Disney+ shows such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka. However, a movie starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
