Super Mario Odysseywill not have a game over state, Nintendo confirms. The company has been steadily revealing more and more information about the game ever since it showcased a newSuper Mario Odysseytrailerat E3 2017.

On the officialSuper Mario OdysseyTwitter page, in Japanese, Nintendo confirmed how the game’s ‘fail’ states will work. When Mario comes into contact with an enemy and loses all of his health or when he falls into the abyss, players will not see a ‘game over’ screen. Instead,Super Mario Odysseywill take 10 coins away from them. Given thatcoins can be used to purchase itemsin the game, this fail state should just be frustrating enough to keep players coming back to try and beat the game again.

Some long-time Mario fans may not be best pleased with this confirmation. Part of the draw to the Mario series and part of the difficulty is that players must check how many lives they have, to avoid a game over. They must also keep track of how many coins they have too – as 100 coins is worth an extra life and therefore provides a bit of a difficulty cushion. Getting rid of that could dramatically impact how players take onSuper Mario Odysseywhen it arrives on the Switch later this year.

On the other hand, some may be glad to see thatSuper Mario Odysseywill be inclusive to players of all skill levels and abilities. Nintendo previously confirmed that the gamewill not punish players too harshly, though it has also stated thatSuper Mario Odysseywas developed with core players in mind.

The lack of a “Game Over” screen will be part of that as Nintendo will not want to turn players away by making them start all over again.Super Mario Odysseyhas many worlds to explore and lots of gameplay opportunities, but if players find themselves in danger and get a “Game Over” state it will put them back to square one.

This could also discourage players from going through the game, purposefully avoiding certain sections and missing out on the fun. By removing this, players will be more inclined to take a look around, knowing that they’ll only be losing coins, and not the game, should Mario’s health run out.

Super Mario Odysseyis set to launch on July 31, 2025 for Nintendo Switch.
