When it comes to the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards, Kathy Bates may break a record, and herMatlockcastmates have something to say about it. Bates stars as the titular character in the CBS series. At 77 years old, Bates would be the oldest nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Seriesif she snags a nomination for the role.
Emmy voters are currently voting on all of the Emmy submissions. Nominations will be announced after those votes are tallied on July 15. The winners will then be announced during the televised ceremony on September 14.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will air on CBS and be streamed on Paramount+.
In recentinterviews withEntertainment Tonight, the cast talked briefly about the chance that Bates could be one of the Emmy nominees. Bates herself admits to being surprised by it all, saying, “I’m so proud of it. I just never expected any of this, you know?”

TheMatlockcast is very excited about thepossibility of an Emmy win for the show and Bates.Jason Ritter, though, is unsurprised by the buzzsurrounding Bates. He told the outlet, “I mean, she’s just been giving incredible performance after incredible performance,” echoing the critics who praised Bates all along for the freshman season.
Likewise,Skye P. Marshall is optimistic about Bates’ chances. She gestured to Bates as she told ET, “We are taking the trophy away, and it is going to come right to the queen, right there.”
Ritter also spoke about the possible nomination as something that would be more than simply honoring the legendary Kathy Bates: “I think it would be a signal to the rest of the industry that magic can happen on network TV.”
What The Cast’s Comments Mean For Matlock
The Matlock Cast Is Tight-Knit
It is clear from their comments about Bates that theMatlockcast is incredibly tight-knit and supportive of one another. Though Ritter, Marshall, and guest-star Beau Bridges have all also been submitted for Emmy consideration in different categories for the show, they are also clearly thrilled by the excitement around Bates.
Of course,a win for any member of the cast at the Emmys - or even a nomination - is a win for the entire show. Even if a single Emmy nomination goes to an actor for their performance in the series, CBS can advertise the series as “Emmy nominated,” and it would likely pull even more eyeballs for the show.
WithMatlock’ssecond seasonlikely premiering right around the time that the Emmys would air, a nomination, or even better, a win, would certainly be good for its sophomore season.
Our Take On The Matlock Cast’s Comments
Their Comments Show An Excitement For Network Television
Streaming and cable series have dominated the Primetime Emmys in recent years. Of the last five Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama series wins, three have been for an HBO show (Zendaya forEuphoriatwice and Sarah Snook forSuccession), one for Netflix (Olivia Colman forThe Crown), and one for FX (Anna Sawai forShōgun).
In fact,Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series has not been won by a leading lady on network television since 2015. That win went to Viola Davis forHow To Get Away With Murder.
That pattern is echoed in most of the Primetime Emmy categories as well. A nomination or a win for a network TV show would go a long way toward showing that there is plenty of talent on network television.Matlockand Kathy Bates could help pave the way for more network TV wins in the future.
