Pokémon Legends: Z-Awill be bringing back one of the Kalos region’s most mysterious characters, hopefully to shed some light on his mysterious origins. Later this year,Pokémon Legends: Z-Awill return players to the Kalos region, which was first explored inPokémon X and Y. While much of the focus of the new game appears to be on Mega Evolution and the new style of battling, the game may also touch on some of the Kalos region’s unique lore, especially as one character fromPokémon X and Yis returning.

Trailers forPokémon Legends: Z-Aconfirm that AZ is returning to the game franchise. The character first appeared inPokémon X and Yand had ties to the fearsome weapon that Team Flare was trying to use. At the conclusion of the game, AZ reunited withhis Eternal Flower Floette, his long-lost partner Pokémon. The fact that AZ and Eternal Flower Floette now comfortably live as the owner/manager of a hotel in Lumiose City isa clear sign that the game is a direct sequel toPokémon X and Y.

AZ’s Eternal Flower Floette, as seen in Pokémon Generations.

AZ Is An Immortal Former Ruler Of Kalos

AZ is a massive three-thousand-year-old man who stands over nine feet tall. The character first appeared inPokémon X and Yas a homeless person who occasionally interacted with the player character. AZ (whose name is pronounced by saying the letters A and Z)was once the king of the Kalos regionand lost his Eternal Flower Floette due to an ancient war. The pair were reunited inPokémon X and Y, and it seems that AZ’s fortunes have improved since then.

According toPokémon Legends: Z-A’s marketing material on the officialPokémonwebsite, AZ is now the owner of Hotel Z. Players will use Hotel Z as a home base. His past history is at least somewhat out in the open,as the marketing material notes that AZ claims to be over three thousand years old. AZ still has Eternal Flower Floette, which is rumored to finally appear as a playable Pokémon inPokémon Legends: Z-Aand may have itsown Mega Evolution form.

Everything We Know About AZ & Eternal Flower Floette (So Far)

AZ’s Backstory Was First Explored In Pokémon X And Y

Most of what we know about AZ’s past comes fromPokémon X and Y.AZ was originally the king of the Kalos region when a war broke out with another region. Both sides used Pokémon as weapons, andAZ’s Eternal Flower Floette died in the process.AZ tried to create a machine to bring his Pokémon back to life, but ultimately converted it into an ultimate weapon. While the weapon brought Floette back to life, the Pokémon left AZ after he used the weapon to end the war by wiping out both armies.

Exposure to the ultimate weapon (which required use of Pokémon’s life energy) extended AZ’s life, and he kept the key to the ultimate weapon on his person so it couldn’t be used again. Team Flare captured AZ and stole the key, which led to theevents ofPokémon X and Y.After the player character became champion,AZ challenged them to a battle and was reunited with Eternal Flower Floette.

AZ’s story as an immortal former ruler of Kalos is clearly one of the more interesting stories coming intoPokémon Legends: Z-A. It will be interesting to see how the character’s story will continue, especially asthe game’s focus is on modernization and AZ is a clear sign of Kalos’s past. Here’s hoping that we learn more about the mysterious AZ whenPokémon Legends: Z-Acomes out later this year.
