Clair Obscur: Expedition 33has a handful of extremely rare achievements that only a small number of players have managed to unlock. For one achievement/trophy in particular, its rarity is likely a result of one specific missable collectible that can completely destroy your shot at completing the game to 100% and getting the elusive Platinum. This collectible requires a little bit of know-how and foresight, and if you miss out on an essential item in the prologue, you’re out of luck.

The"Follow the Trail"achievement/trophy has only been unlocked by 9.7% ofClair Obscurplayers on Steam, making it thesecond-rarest achievementin the game. This trophy is associated withcollecting every journalentry around the Continent, and it’s a major task that has to be completed in a single run. Unlike many other things that carry over intoNG+ inClair Obscur, journals reset every time you start a new run, so you have to collect all of them in a single go, including the Survivor Journal.

The Survivor Journal Is Easily Missed & Can Ruin Your Run

You Need The Old Key From The Prologue To Get The Survivor Journal

While there aren’t very many missables in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,the Survival Journal can be missed if you don’t take a critical step during the Prologue. You likely collected a fewFestival Tokensin the Prologue, which can be used for a variety of different items. Interestingly, these can actually be saved for an NG+ run to obtain thesecret baguette weaponsfor each character, though you’ll have to play into NG++ to get all five.

However, the more practical use for these tokens is to use them during the Prologue at the three different vendors. You can get a fancy new Bun haircut for Gustave, a weird Pictos that can later be converted into theAugmented AimPictos inthe Gestral Village, and most importantly, an “artifact” called theOld Keythat will be placed in your inventory with no apparent immediate use. This key is, in fact, thekey to unlocking the Survivor Journalthat prevents most players from completing the"Follow the Trail"trophy.

How To Make Sure You Don’t Miss The Survivor Journal

Find Broken Pipe In Old Lumiere After Monoco’s Big Oopsie

To ensure that you’re able to get all the journals and unlock the"Follow the Trail"trophy, you’ll need to first use the Festival Token to get the Old Key during the Prologue. If you don’t get this key, you cannot get the trophy, and you’ll have to do an entirely new run. Once you get the key, you’ll have to progress the story up to Old Lumiere in Act 2 of the game.

There’s a point where Monoco blows things up and splits the party in two, and when you’re playing as Maelle and Verso, you’ll be able to explore the area and eventually come upon a busted pipe with a locked gate.Use the Old Key on this gate to grab the Survivor Journal. This is just one of the many journals you’ll need to collect for the trophy, and there are some difficult ones to track down, including one that requires defeating Simon, thehardest boss inClair Obscur.

The"Follow the Trail"trophy is hands-down one of the most frustrating and time-consuming in the game, right up there with theMusic Records trophy,“Connoiseur.“Players can spend the entire game collecting these journals just to find they are only missing one, and it can be absolutely soul-crushing. If you’re pursuing all the trophies in the game, be sure to grab the Old Key in the Prologue ofClair Obscur: Expedition 33, or you’re going to be severely disappointed.
