The popular Peacock original seriesTwisted Metalis returning to the streaming network for season 2. The series, starring Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, and Samoa Joe, is an adaptation of the celebrated Sony PlayStation video game of the same name, and will introduce several new characters throughout the season.
While some character backstories remain connected to the game, others will have a brand-new creative approach to their stories.Twisted Metalseason 2premieres July 31st exclusively on Peacock.
During a set visit withScreenRant’s Brennan Klein, co-creator and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith shared details regarding a new character, Axel (Michael James Shaw), and his origin. Smith stated thatAxel will have a somewhat different backstory than his video game counterpart. His new backstory will include references to the games, but the story will “take him down a new path.” Check out his quote below:
He has a traumatic backstory, just like in the games. We’re kind of finding a new backstory for him that references his other stuff [but] we’re trying to take him down a new path.
Axel Will Have A Brand New Story Arc

Axel, a popular character in the franchise, is being introduced in season 2 as part of the new storyline where Calypso (Anthony Carrigan) is hosting a tournament to provide the winner with one wish. WhileAxel had a defined story in the video game arc, Smith’s interpolation of Axel will provide the character with a more robust story in line with the show’s vision.
Axel was first introduced to theTwisted Metalgame series in 1996 withTwisted Metal 2. While theTwisted Metalgames have not seen a new entry since 2012, Axel was an active part of the games until his final appearance in 2008’sTwisted Metal: Lost.
Axel is an interesting character to bring to live-action as his name is very literal.Axel’s mode of transportation is being the axle of his vehicle between two giant wheels, although with a slightly different spelling. How a character like that is translated will be a huge draw forTwisted Metalseason 2.

Fits The Wild, Unpredictable Energy Of The Show
Given Axel’s unique design, it will be interesting to see how the character came to be in his situation. While all the other characters are involved in death-defying races, Axel will stand out, as the character is physically more exposed. An altered origin for the character is something worth exploring, as Axel is different from anyone else.
Twisted Metalis a show that has wild episodes that are very entertaining, but also with dark and edgy undertones. A tragic backstory for a notable character like Axel provides the writers an opportunity to give his motivation in the series more teeth, while giving the other characters more meaningful interactions.
