Watsonseason 2 will feature the return of Sherlock Holmes, with showrunner Craig Sweeny tellingVarietythat “When Watson’s best friend and former partner makes a shocking reappearance in his life, Watson is forced to confront their shared past—and a secret that may lie buried within Watson’s own body.”

Once Upon a Timestar Carlyle was tapped to play the character in his on-screen return, and Sweeny’s comments make it clear that Holmes won’t be confined to flashbacks.

Holmes will be played by Robert Carlyle, who rose to prominence in movies likeTrainspotting,Ravenous, and28 Weeks Later. Although Matt Berry played Holmes in recordings throughout season 1,Once Upon a Timestar Carlyle was tapped to play the character in his on-screen return, and Sweeny’s comments make it clear that Holmes won’t be confined to flashbacks.

Watsonseason 2 will premiere on Monday, July 04, 2025, at 10 pm ET on CBS.
