Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Better Sister.Chloe (Jessica Biel) had a blood-stained knife inThe Better Sister, but Prime Video’s murder mystery series never explained what happened to it after Nicky (Elizabeth Banks) washed it. For most of its eight-episode run, the entirecast ofThe Better Sisterseemed like they could have killed Adam Macintosh (Corey Stoll). Chloe and Nicky were both abused by him, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan) wanted to protect his mothers, and several other characters all had legitimate motives. It made for an astounding mystery, butThe Better Sisterlost track of one key detail among all its suspects and red herrings.

By theend ofThe Better Sister, the truth of Adam’s murder comes out. Nicky killed Adam to protect her sister and son, and Chloe then helped her cover everything up. Chloe’s cover-up even exposed Gentry Group’s human trafficking and other international crimes, and the entire series seemed to wrap itself up in a neat bow. One detail, however, painted Chloe as the killer, and though she didn’t actually kill Adam,The Better Sistercompletely forgot to resolve her loose thread.

Nicky Never Addressed Chloe’s Blood-Stained Knife In The Better Sister

Nicky Cleaned Chloe’s Knife, But She Never Asked Her Sister About It

Some ofScreen Rant’s own readers pointed out that Chloe was seen carrying a bloody knife just after she found Adam’s body, butThe Better Sisternever revisited that particular detail. Nicky even found the knife in Chloe’s glove box later on in the season, but instead of confronting her sister about it, Nicky just washed it with bleach, destroying the evidence. From that point on, the only knife that was important toThe Better Sisterwas Nicky’s. Chloe used that one to frame Bill Braddock (Matthew Modine), and we have no idea what happened to hers, other than the insinuation that Nicky got rid of it.

Since Chloe Didn’t Kill Adam, Her Bloody Knife Seems To Be Either A Red Herring Or A Plot Hole

Nicky didn’t revisit the topic of Chloe’s bloody knife, andThe Better Sisterdidn’t either. The Better Sisternever explains why Chloe brought her knife into the house when she found Adam’s body, and it doesn’t answer why it was covered in blood. As previously mentioned, Chloe’s knife is never seen again after Nicky washes it, and the only knife that’s important from that point forward is Nicky’s. At this point, it seems likeThe Better Sistereither intentionally left it unexplained as a red herring or unintentionally made it into a plot hole for the show.

It also seems like Chloe’s knife is more of a plot hole than a red herring. Most of the false leads inThe Better Sisterwere wrapped up neatly in the finale. Ethan, for example, explained that he staged a break-in to protect Chloe as he thought she was the one who murdered Adam.If Chloe’s knife really was a red herring,The Better Sistershould have done more to show why it wasn’t actually important to the mystery of Adam’s murder. As it stands, it seems like someone at Prime Video forgot about the knife in disappointing fashion.

The Better Sister Could Still Address Chloe’s Knife In Season 2

The Better Sister Season 2 Could Reveal That Chloe Finished Adam Off When She Found Him

The only glimmer of hope that Chloe’s knife wasn’t just an overlooked detail lies inThe Better Sister’s chances of getting renewed. Though it was billed as a limited series and based on a book with no sequel, the ending ofThe Better Sisterlaid the groundwork for a potential second season. Jake’s (Gabriel Sloyer) death, Gentry Group’s crimes, and some of thechangesThe Better Sistermade to the bookcould all be expanded upon in a second season.IfThe Better Sisterseason 2 ever does happen, it could finally reveal what became of Chloe’s knife and why she had it in the first place.

The murder case surrounding Adam’s death is closed, but Chloe’s knife could still be important toThe Better Sisterseason 2.Chloe may reveal to Nicky or Ethan that she also found Adam while he was still alive, and that she actually finished him off. That would explain why she had the knife, at least, and Nicky could mention that it was a good idea to get rid of it. That would even strengthen the relationship between Nicky and Chloe and add even more layers of moral ambiguity to Chloe’s story. At the very least, it would solve one ofThe Better Sister’s biggest plot holes.
