InStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’sending, we see Rey bury Leia Organa and Anakin Skywalker’s respective lightsabers, but where doesLuke Skywalker’slightsaber end up following his death inStar Wars: The Last Jedi? Of the complaints audiences tend to have about the sequels, the handling of Luke’s character, including his death, typically ranks high on the list.
While there areissues with theStar Warssequel trilogy, and while Luke’s absence inStar Wars: The Force Awakenswas disappointing, Luke’s death inThe Last Jedidoes mirror Obi-Wan Kenobi’s, which is a niceStar Wars’rhyme.' Yet,The Last Jedidoesn’t reveal what happens to Luke’s lightsaber after his death—only aStar Warsnovel does that.

Luke Took His Lightsaber With Him To Ahch-To
This Lightsaber Just Wasn’t A Focus
Although there’s plenty of focus on Rey handing Anakin Skywalker’s iconic blue lightsaber to Luke at the beginning ofThe Last Jedi(and Luke tossing it, which enraged audiences),Luke’s green lightsaber is barely seen in the movie. In fact, we only really see it in action during the flashback sequence in which Luke nearly kills Ben Solo.
Even when Luke appears before Kylo Ren on Crait—which we now know was Luke using Astral Projection, one ofStar Wars’Force powers—it’s Anakin’s blue saber that we see, likely just to taunt Kylo. In his hate and rage, Kylo doesn’t even seem to notice that Luke isn’t wielding his own lightsaber.

Yet,Luke did have his green lightsaber with him on Ahch-To, so, when the strength required to project himself via the Force kills him, where exactly does his lightsaber go?The Last Jedidoesn’t answer this question on-screen, butTheLast Jedinovelization does.
Luke’s Green Lightsaber Was Gathered Up By The Caretakers Of Ahch-To
The Last Jedi Expanded Novelization Reveals More Details About This
In the canon novelStar Wars: The Last Jedi: Expanded Edition, written by Jason Fry, it is confirmed thatthe caretakers on Ahch-To collected Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber after his death. This makes sense, as they are the only ones present for his death, and their role is clearly protecting/preserving the history of the Jedi, at least in part.

This raises some exciting questions about what could be next for Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. It’s possible that it will simply be hidden away on the island and not appear again, particularly because Rey is seemingly the only person who knows the location of Ahch-To at present, and her time with Skywalker lightsabers seems over.
Rey is seemingly the only person who knows the location of Ahch-To at present, and her time with Skywalker lightsabers seems over.
After all, she made a point of burying Leia and Anakin’s sabers on Tatooine, literally and figuratively putting them to rest. It would feel like backpedaling for her to now go back to get Luke’s saber. That possibility certainly isn’t out of the question, asStar Warsclearly loves to bring back an iconic symbol, but it feels unlikely.
The saber could still return at some point even outside of the next stage of Rey’sStar Warsstory, but that remains to be seen. At least for now,Luke Skywalker’sgreen lightsaber remains on Ahch-To, tended to by the island’s caretakers following his death inStar Wars: The Last Jedi.
