Warning! SPOILERS For And Just Like That’s Series Finale - “Party of One”

There’s a reason thatAnd Just Like Thatdidn’t bring back a divisive character for its finale, even though Che Diaz (Sara Ramírez) had the perfect opportunity to return.Sex and the City’s revival show aired its final episode on August 14, after the announcement thatAnd Just Like Thatwas ending after three seasons.

Despite Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) appearing at a pet clinic that looks identical to the one that her partner worked at inAnd Just Like Thatseason 2, Ramírez didn’t return. Showrunner Michael Patrick King explained the decision toVanity Fair, revealing that the veterinarian Miranda and Joy (Dolly Wells) visit isn’t the same one that Che worked for:

This is not the same pet clinic. It’s a different pet clinic, but we did scream-laugh about it in the writing room and decided that it would be too upstage-y. [Laughs.] In my mind, Che no longer works in a pet clinic; they’re starring in a show on some streamer.

What King’s Comments Mean For And Just Like That

Michael Patrick King confirms that, while Miranda and Joy’s story looked like it could have overlapped with Hobbes’ former partner, Che had no connection to season 3. However, King’s statement also reveals that the similarity wasn’t lost onAnd Just Like That’s creators, with the showrunner remarking that they had a good laugh about it in the writer’s room.

Ultimately, King said that returning Che to the narrative so late in the game would upstage Miranda and Joy’s interaction, and that’s true. Che is long gone inAnd Just Like Thatseason 3, so Ramírez’s return in the finale would have been too late to flesh out an interesting story, but it also would have been misaligned.

Ramírez didn’t return forAnd Just Like Thatseason 3after the character brought divisive attention to the show for two consecutive seasons. However, King gave audiences some insight into what the character is up to, saying that, in his mind,“Che no longer works in a pet clinic,”and is starring in a streaming show.

Our Take On And Just Like That Omitting Che Diaz

When Miranda walks into the high-end, glass-walled pet clinic inAnd Just Like Thatseason 3, episode 12, I immediately thought that it was Che’s place. However, it’s clear after a moment that it isn’t the same vet, and the revival show has no plans on returning its most controversial character, with just moments to end the story.

Theend ofAnd Just Like Thatbenefits from focusing on its current characters. After both Ramírez and Karen Pittman, who played Nya Wallace, didn’t return for the third installment, characters like Seema (Sarita Choudhury), Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker), and Anthony (Mario Cantone) got more screentime, enhancingAnd Just Like That’s final chapter by focusing on a more intimate group.
