There is the adage, which has taken on a variety of forms over the years, that “if everyone is famous, no one is,” or, as the Marvel Universe equivalent might go, “if everymutant’s powers are Omega-level, no mutant’s powers are really Omega-level.” The term has always been malleable, just like any superhero terminology, and subject to the necessities of story rather than serving as a truly strict rule. This is actually what makesUltimate Wolverine#4’s introduction of the term into the Ultimate Universe notable, because it is done in a concentrated way.
It feels like a single, and singular, mutant powerhouse is being set up for a narrative purpose. The questions now are what the purpose will be, and, of course, who the Ultimate Omega-mutant will be.
That is, Marvel’s current version of the Ultimate Universe is telling a single, overarching story, andinjecting an Omega-level mutant into that story seems like a reflection of this more cohesive, directed version of the Marvel mythos. In traditional Marvel storytelling, it would be more acceptable to introduce the open-endedidea of Omega-level mutants, but here, it feels like a single, and singular, mutant powerhouse is being set up for a narrative purpose. Ultimate Wolverine Is Serving Up A More Compact Version Of The X-Men Franchise

Marvel’sUltimate X-Mentitle, written and illustrated by Peach Momoko, has been a refreshingly distinct take on the franchise, but it has also felt more isolated from that Ultimate Universe narrative than the other books in the line.Ultimate Wolverine, by contrast, is deeply situated in the lore of this continuity, and seems destined to have major implications for how the line-wide story arc will play out. So far, the book has featured a brainwashed Wolverine pitted against his former comrades in the mutant resistance, but the series has already taken steps towards reverting him to heroic status.
It may beWolverine himself who turns out to be Ultimate Marvel’s only Omega-level mutant, or perhaps this Universe’s version of Jean Grey; alternatively, it could be someone else entirely. There may also be more to this continuity’s reinvention of Omega-mythology, and what Marvel chooses to do inUltimate Wolverineand beyond could impact how the term is used in the future. If nothing else, it can use the term sparingly, and with great care, and in that way, instill in it the appropriate stakes, making it truly important toX-Menlore.
