Warning: spoilers ahead for Psylocke #9!TheX-Menhave had some of Marvel’s most iconic superhero costumes, and now,Psylockehas received a jaw-dropping, all-white look and has been dubbed “The Lady in White.” Though this new costume is a striking look for Kwannon, the outfit will certainly come at a huge cost to the X-Men hero as Psylocke has been possessed by a Yokai.

Kwannon’s demonic upgrade enhances her powers with unbelievable spiritual energy.

InPsylocke #9, from Alyssa Wong and Vincenzo Carratu, Kwannon’s childhood friend Mitsuki (from her upbringing inthe evil ninja cult the Hand) is revealed to not only be alive, but conspiring with spirits called Yokai to take over the Hand. Mitsuki asks Psylocke to help her, and when the X-Men’s psychic ninja refuses, Mitsuki makes it clear that she won’t take no for an answer.

Kwannon is forcibly possessed by a Yokai called the Lady in White, transforming into a new all-white form in a blast of psychic energy. In this form, Psylocke gains the extra psychic energy of the Yokai, as well as being able to command lesser demons.

While Psylocke’s new all-white look is a bold departure from her classic black and purple, the circumstances surrounding this look do not bode well for Kwannon at all, as it brings her back to the most traumatic part of her origin story.Kwannon’s childhood friend has sacrificed her to the Lady in White, and subsequently resurfaced painful memories of her past.

Mitsuki explains that because Kwannon’s soul has been opened so many times, it leaves her vulnerable to being taken over by spirits, such as the Lady in White. Despite Kwannon’s latest upgrade enhancing her powers with incredible spiritual energy, this possession is more akin to a curse that forces her to face her past in a more literal sense.

Like many X-Men, Psylocke’s life has been steeped in tragedy and violence, and this new outfit forces her to confront both her time being brought up in the Hand and the many yearsBetsy Braddock was piloting Kwannon’s body. In transforming into the Lady in White, Kwannon has returned to the Hand and once again lost her bodily autonomy.

Psylocke’s Latest Upgrade to Her Powers Doubles as a Curse

Psylocke’s status as the Lady in Whitecombines her strong psychic powerswith the abilities of a Yokai, turning her into a high-level telekinetic/telepathic double-threat. Indeed, Mitsuki explains thatthe Lady in White is a Yokai that avenges tormented children by driving their abusers insane.

Though Psylocke has been gifted a new look and codename, this ultimately comes at a massive cost to the hero as she is stripped of her own free will, recalling her history of losing her body to others. This bold new look is everythingPsylockehas fought to escape, dragging theX-Menhero in a nightmarish situation where her body and powers are stolen by a monster.
